Kjolur - Iceland

Kjölur - North to South

We changed horses daily, some days two different. All horses were good, kind and the tack was top notch.

My Neutral rating by no means applies to the horses – but for the equipment. It was uncommonly dirty when we took it over, but we handed it back with freshly polished saddles. I am well aware that after just half a day's ride it is dirty due to dust etc, but it was not nice to take over both saddle and saddlebag in the condition it was in.

Much of the riding was at the tolt, which takes some getting use to. We changed horses at least once a day, so we had the chance to experience how different these Icelandic horses are to ride. Towards the end of the holiday we had all mastered this pace and developed a new riding style. These horses are incredibly sure footed, you could never tackle such terrain on any other breed, and so we were able to ride in some incredible places. After just one day of settling in to the pace, we rode with the herd. That has to be one of the best riding experiences you can have, and these little horses feel so safe that you can really relax an enjoy being part of a fast moving herd ranging over a completely open wild landscape - Brilliant!

During the course of the 6 day ride, I rode 10 different horses ,the majority of which were amazing. There were a few horses which were more difficult to ride particularly if you had not ridden Icelandic horses previously. I personally would of preferred for the pace to be slower at times ie some walking as the majority of the time we were going at a very fast pace and I would of liked more time to absorb the dramatic scenery particularly as we were not in a hurry to get anywhere. Most days we did not start riding until about 11am. The day across the lava field was an exception to this and I loved it.
We only walked if the ground was too rocky to trot. The horses were very fit and in good condition.
My experience as an endurance rider was of great assistance.
I was selected to ride with the herd at the front on one occasion which was a fantastic experience and it was a real privilege to watch Gustav and his team at work. I would have no hesitation in recommending this ride as it was a unique experience.
