Spain - Los Alamos
As you ride you have views of the beaches of Cape Trafalgar and across to the coast of Africa. This is a peaceful part of the country which has escaped mass tourism – here you ride in rural Spain.
Each day’s ride is different. You ride through the forest with its sandy tracks, and onto the beaches which stretch for over ten kilometres on some days.
For most of the year there is an average of four hours in the saddle each day. You head out each morning in the forest, and are usually home to put the horses away and head for lunch at a local bar.
On the seven night Villa Based Ride you have the opportunity to visit the Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez. Here you see a display of traditional riding and carriage driving. Later you have the chance to visit the school’s on-site traditional saddlers and stately home, and have a tapas lunch and sherry tasting session in the city.
The horses are mainly Andalucian and Andalucian-Arab crosses. They are ridden in English tack. The weight limit for the Andalucian horses is 83kg, but there are some horses suitable for experienced riders up to 100kg.
You should be confident at all paces riding a forward going and responsive horse. The pace is varied and there are many opportunities for canters and gallops in the forest and along the beach. Beach riding is always subject to the tide conditions.
Normally riding close to the ocean’s edge is not allowed between mid-June and mid-September. However, Los Alamos has been granted a license to ride on the beach in the summer months providing they are on the beach early in the morning. On these mornings, you will stop for breakfast at a local café.
Accommodation is in the Hacienda Jacaranda. The bedrooms are all en-suite and have double beds (one with two double beds to make a twin room).
Single rooms are subject to availability at no extra cost.
The rooms are set in spacious private gardens of palm, cactus and fruit trees. There is a swimming pool (not heated), and the spacious dining area and lounge has an open fire, television, DVD player and music system.
Ingredients are provided for you to make your own breakfast in the morning. The villa is also stocked with a range of soft and alcoholic drinks for the week. Dinners are delicious home made meals at the villa, and lunch is taken at local bars.
Open all year for seven night stays.
Short breaks of four nights (arriving Sunday, departing Thursday) are possible at certain times of year. By exception, for groups of four or more, short breaks may be possible for arriving Wednesday; departing Sunday.

The closest airport is Gibraltar. Your flight should be scheduled to arrive to Gibraltar before 13:00 on the first day. On the last day, your flight should be scheduled to depart after 10.30.
Alternatively, transfers are also available from Malaga. If flying to Malaga, your flight should arrive before 12:00 on the first day. On the last day, your flight should depart after 11:00.
Please note that transfers are at pre-set times. If you choose to book flights outside of these times then an additional transfer fee of EUR 150 each way may be applicable, or you may wish to hire a car at the airport.
Los Alamos is on the edge of la Breña National Park on the Atlantic coast of southern Spain.
Daytime temperatures vary from about 15°C from November to March and from 30°C and above during June, July and August. Rainfall is very light with virtually no rain from the beginning of May to the end of September. However it can rain in winter months with most rainfall in November and early December and again in March/April.
The horses were fantastic. Rachel took care to match everyone with a suitable horse. I rode two, both of whom were forward going, but also fun sensible and good-natured. I really couldn’t have asked for more. Nothing wrong. I love the hard copy itinerary and the In the Saddle fabric pouch it comes in. When you book with In the Saddle you know you are going to have a good time.
