The largest of the Greek Islands, Crete is located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea and is defined by a high mountain range running west to east in the centre of the island. High mountain passes and fertile plateaux descend into deep gorges and then give way to white beaches and turquoise seas.

Crete is a popular tourist destination yet retains its unique character and rich mythology associated with the ancient Greek Gods and the Minoan civilisation. Holding a strategic position between three continents, Crete boasts a colourful history and evidence remains of the many cultures that have influenced Crete from the famous Minoan Palace of Knossos and Venetian labyrinths to medieval castles, Renaissance mansions, Ottoman mosques and Byzantine monasteries.
