France - Cerfcheval

Discover the rural landscapes, country paths and pretty views synonymous with this part of France. On these holidays you will clatter through sleepy villages, ride through shady woodland and pause for a picnic lunch by the side of a river or perhaps in the shade of an ancient fortress. This is a time to relax, unwind and simply enjoy being on horseback in the French countryside.

A horse is selected for you and it then becomes your responsibility to tack up and care for it during the ride; your guide is on hand to help if required. The group sizes are kept small with a usual maximum of six guests.

French riders are privileged to have many thousands of miles of "randonées" (bridle paths) with accommodation along the way to cater for both rider and horse. Your guide will take great pleasure in showing you the network of tracks and paths which criss-cross this lovely part of western France.

Most of the overnight stops are small farmhouses and gîtes owned by French families who will cook traditional French farmhouse food for you and maybe join you for supper to give an insight on their country life. Lunch is at a scenic spot along the way.

There are four itineraries to choose from;

MONTS DE BLOND: Travel through three different departments; the Vienne, the Haute-Vienne and the Charente. The landscape changes with each passing day, from rolling hills and meadows, to narrow woodland tracks, rocky outcrops and stony paths. The rocky and steep terrain on some days can make for slightly slower progress, but there are some spectacular views to be had.

COUNTRYSIDE AND VILLAGES: Explore idyllic French villages on this six night trail, which begins and ends with overnight stays at Cerfcheval, with other nights spent in typical gîte accommodation.

CASTLES AND LANDSCAPES: A six night ride taking in the charming villages of Nerignac and Abzac. Explore on horseback a picturesque rural landscape of isolated farms and medieval villages.

PILGRIMS ROUTE: This five night trail follows part of the old route to Santiago de Compostella, stopping off at some of the churches, abbeys and castles along the way.

Meander through the French countryside, explore the rivers and hills of the Vienne region. Discover a region of France which feels untouched and unchanged.

My top tip:

Taking a French phrasebook with you is a good idea. Your local hosts will appreciate any effort made by you to speak French!
