Ecuador - Andean Adventure

Explore the stunning verdant valleys of the Cayambe and Zuleta area known as the northern highlands. Ride across patchworks of fields on rural tracks, and later, into the remote Andes in the eastern foothills of snow-capped Cotopaxi.

Your adventure begins on the open plains beneath the impressive Cayambe Volcano. Ride between cultivated fields and along wide rural lanes and into the pastoral Zuleta Valley. Discover forests of eucalyptus and pine as you ride onto the slopes of Imbabura. Here there is a good chance of seeing the mountain tanager, vermillion fly catcher and the giant hummingbird. From the hamlet of San Clemente you ride over a ridge and into the stunning San Pablo valley.

The second part of the ride takes you across the wide open plains of the Cotopaxi National Park. This is a remote place, where the majesty of Andean peaks and rugged scenery take your breath away.

The accommodation on the Andean Adventure tour is comfortable, with some shared bathrooms.

If you would prefer to stay in more comfortable colonial-era historic Haciendas then you may wish to consider the Colonial Haciendas tour.  The Colonial Haciendas tour also takes in two distinct areas, (Zuleta and Cotopaxi); it does not go into such a remote part of Cotopaxi National Park but does include a visit to the famous Otavalo market, hacienda visits and other visits on foot to places of interest.

You could also consider the Volcanoes & Vistas, which is a ten night tour combining riding in the northern highlands and Cotopaxi area, with three days in the remote Pinan region.

A real adventure, during which you will see some of the true wonders of Ecuador.

My top tip:

This ride is at high altitude and we do recommend that you arrive to Quito at least one day prior to the start of the ride in order to acclimatise as much as you can.
