Motswiri Camp

Motswiri Camp

These itineraries only serve as a guide; all scenarios are dependent on the season and levels of the Spillway. During cooler months one longer ride may replace the normal morning and evening rides. We reserve the right to alter the itinerary in any way and leave this to the discretion of the guides. Local weather conditions may also affect game movements.

Day One

On arrival in Maun you are met and transferred by light aircraft to camp.  The flight is approximately 40 minutes.  On arrival at the airstrip, you are met and transferred to Motswiri camp, which is a short drive away.  Depending on your time of arrival, you will have a light lunch or tea with time to settle in before getting ready for the evening ride where you can get to know your horse.  After the ride, you return to camp for a three course, candlelit dinner.

Day Two

Awoken by a cup of tea or coffee in bed, followed by a light breakfast you then ride out for a longer ride along the spillway with the hope of seeing elephant, giraffe and, if you are lucky, the rare and beautiful roan and sable antelope.  Return back to camp for lunch then a well earned siesta before heading off again for a gentle evening ride.

Day Three

Leave camp early to wade across the Spillway, heading for a distant waterhole before returning to camp for lunch.  The evening ride is spent exploring the Delta region to the East of camp.  Later on, drinks and dinner are served again at camp.

Day Four

You ride through different country, making your way through the majestic riverine forest along the Selinda Spillway where you may encounter giraffe or zebra while riding through the mopane woodlands.  Return to camp for an afternoon relaxing either on the viewing platform at camp or around the pool.  Later on you will be given the choice to try out the canoes in camp or to go for a bush walk.  You are more than welcome to ride again if you wish!

Day Five

Ride east along the Selinda Spillway stopping for a rest in a shady spot overlooking a breathtaking pool with superb birdlife and perhaps see the resident pod of hippo.  Return to camp for lunch and then perhaps enjoy sundowners and a spot of fishing from the boat before dinner.

Day Six

This mornings ride sees you splashing through water along the false spillway to the North of the Selinda Spillway, which is home to the elusive roan and sable antelope.  En route, you may see elephant, giraffe, zebra and impala.   Head back to Motswiri camp for lunch and then ride out again in the afternoon.

Day Seven

For your last full day you ride to the east of Motswiri camp and towards the huge flood plains along the boundary of the concession area.  The evening offers a last quiet ride back to Motswiri.

Day Eight

For your final ride you can decide which route to take depending on what you have come across over the past few days. Your guides will make sure that you are back in plenty of time to get ready for your onward flight out of Motswiri.

Abigail says:

View game not usually associated with the Okavango Delta, such as the rare sable antelope.

My top tip:

Take your non-riding friends and partners with you and they can go on game walks, drives and boat trips whilst you are riding.
