Join this circular trail in South Rhodes, a combination of mountain trails, often with steep ascents and descents, contrasting with riding on the beach.

There are little villages to explore along the way together with crusader castles, hidden churches and monasteries. Between May and October the seas are usually warm enough to take the horses in for a paddle or swim. In total you cover around 120 kms.

The horses are crosses of Arabian, Appaloosa, Haflinger and Andalucian.  They are not overly large standing between 14.2 hh and 15.2 hh with one horse who is 16 hh and can carry 100 kg.

They are ridden in Western saddles and tack with a loose rein.  If you have never ridden western style before this is not a problem.  As long as you are open to learning a new style, you will be given instruction before and during the trail.

For the trail ride you should be a confident rider and fit for up to five and a half hours riding per day. The mountain riding can be challenging with steep inclines and you may need to dismount and lead your horse on the steepest sections.

Novice and intermediate riders may be accepted onto centre based rides.

This is a participatory riding holiday and you are expected to groom and tack up your horse in the morning and at lunchtime as well as make sure they are settled in the field at the end of the day.  You will be instructed in how to tack up and will be given assistance when needed.

On the South Rhodes Trail you stay in simple hostels and small village hotels.

The first two nights and the last night are at the Thari hostel near to the horses' base.  At Thari there are two twin rooms each with their own bathroom, a family room sleeping up to four which has a separate shower room and a recently renovated house which has two bedrooms each with their own bathroom.

Please note that there are shared bathroom facilities at Filimonas monastery (one night on the trail) which comprise two toilets and one shower between all the guest bedrooms.

Guest Review

Lovely horses who all walked out well and were very responsive. Very happy with my horse and there was a change of mount if needed. I could think of no way you could improve, it was all excellent with lovely staff.

Ride Report

Claire Douglas
Claire Douglas
The riding style is western and you are given a demonstration on how to mount, turn left, right and stop. After this, you have a short lesson in the outdoor ring so that you get the feel of your horse. You are encouraged to ride two handed on the first day and after that you can ride one handed if you want. It is not necessary to have ridden Western before as long as you are open to learning a new style.

You can expect a wonderfully warm welcome from Elpida and her family.

My Top Tip

In the summer months from May to October don't forget to take your swimwear so you can take the horses into the sea.
