Kenya - Maasai Mara | Offbeat
Offbeat Safaris have been operating for over 30 years and offer mobile riding safaris in areas of big game. Seeing Kenya from the back of a well-schooled horse is a pleasure and there is nothing more special than riding amongst the spectacular wildlife of the Masai Mara. Guests on the mobile safaris stay in a traditional tented safari camp which moves through the wilderness, fully supported by an experienced team.
Game drives and bush walks are available for non-riders or for anybody who would like a rest from the saddle. Enjoy days of exhilarating sightings, be it on horseback or by vehicle, before enjoying a sundowner and a lovingly prepared meal.
You should be a competent rider fit and secure in the saddle at all paces as you will be riding for approximately four to six hours a day. Since this is an area with dangerous game all riders should be confident and secure in the saddle and able to stay on your horse should you need to react quickly. The pace can be fast and challenging at times and riders will be able to spread out and take their own line where possible to make the most of the excellent open country.
There is a great selection of forward going and well behaved horses who are sure footed over the terrain. The horses include a mixture of breeds with several thoroughbreds, as well as thoroughbred and Arab crosses and polo ponies. They are mostly between about 14.2hh and 16.2hh and are responsive and forward going.
The riding tack and style is English.
Accommodation on this safari is in remote tented camps which move every few days. Spacious double safari tents are used with comfortable beds, tables, chairs and linen provided. Camp has shared hot showers and each tent has a private long drop loo. There is a large 'mess tent' for meals - or sometimes the long dining table is set up under the stars.
Tents can be made up with double or twin beds.

TRANSFERS Nairobi airport transfers on arrival and departure days of safari and the air transfer to and from the Masai Mara are included.
The meeting point on day one of the safari is Nairobi Wilson Airport at c. 9am for a flight to the Mara departing at c.10:30.
You are recommended to arrive into Nairobi the day before. On the morning of your safari you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Wilson Airport.
On the last day of the safari your flight from the Mara arrives back to Nairobi Wilson at c.16:00. If you intend to fly home that evening we recommend booking international flights departing after 22:00. Transfers from Wilson Airport to the international airport or to your Nairobi hotel are included.
Located in the Maasai Mara, perhaps the most well known game reserve in the world.
The climate in Kenya is fine all year round with little seasonal variation. During the day it will get hot while at night temperatures can drop quite sharply and it can feel cold. The long rains fall in April and May and the short rains in November.
Outstanding riding with the prolific game, the migration was exceptional. Amazingly close to Elephant and Lion on the horses, crossing the Mara with hippos close by was interesting! The add on I did at the Offbeat Mara camp gave me wonderful opportunities to see the animal and bird life from a different perspective and being guided here by Maasai.
