Tanzania - Kilimanjaro Horse Safari
This mobile horse safari takes you off the beaten track and promises to be an unforgettable experience. Your experienced and knowledgeable guides will take you deep into the bush to witness the wonders that Africa has to offer; the wildlife, the scenery, and the interaction with the local tribes who inhabit these areas.
This seven night safari takes you through the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro northwards over Tanzanian farmland and the Maasai steppe. There are many possibilities for cultural interactions with the local people.
Follow in the footsteps of the largest mammal on earth, the elephant. Plains game abound and there are opportunities for some long gallops. The first night is in a lodge near Arusha and the following six nights are in mobile safari camps.
This safari is for experienced riders, due to the fast pace and because you will be riding in areas of big game.
You will be riding for approximately four to six hours a day, with stops for refreshments and lunch. For this safari you must be a fit and experienced rider in the outdoors at all paces. Since this is an area with dangerous game all riders should be confident and secure in the saddle and able to stay on your horse should you need to react quickly. The pace can be fast and challenging at times. There will be occasions when you need to lead your horse on foot, so general fitness is important.
The horses are all purpose trained safari horses, with a mix of local breeds and thoroughbreds. They range between 14.2hh and 16hh. All the horses are given lots of love, care and attention and have nice characters and strong personalities. With a range of temperaments, there are horses suitable for different preferences, and your guides take great care in finding a good fit for each rider.
Riding style is English although many of the horses are polo trained and so used to being ridden with the reins in one hand. The horses are mainly ridden in snaffle bridles. There is a choice of saddles, either general purpose English leather or Wintec saddles, and South African trail saddles - although some horses may go better in one or the other. Please let us know if you prefer an English saddle, although this may limit the selection of horses available for you. Each horse also carries two pommel bags for your water bottle and camera.
Hard hats are mandatory.
Your first night is normally spent in one of the lodges on the Wildlife & Golf Estate which is approximately midway between Kilimanjaro Airport and the town of Arusha. Occasionally you may stay at a nearby lodge (not on the Wildlife Estate) but of similar standard.
Whilst on safari, you stay in spacious tents with mosquito netted doors and windows. Each tent has cot beds, cotton bedding, towels and a solar light. There is one bush loo and bucket shower per tent/two people.
Single tents (with a shared toilet/shower tent) are available and a supplement is payable for this.
Private Kilimanjaro Horse Safaris can be arranged for groups of four or more.
Each set date safari needs a minimum of four guests to confirm to run.

TRANSFERS Included from Kilimanjaro/Arusha on set days for the Kilimanjaro Elephant Safari. At other times transfers can be arranged for c. £80.19 per vehicle each way.
Return transfers are included from Kilimanjaro airport or Arusha on the first and last days of the safari.
Flights can arrive at any time on the first day of the safari. Flights on the last day must depart after 14:00.
Check-in to your room is usually early afternoon on the first day. If you arrive before this you can make use of the main facilities until your room is ready, or you could pay for early check-in. We can also book accommodation if you choose to arrive one or more days ahead of the safari.
On the last day you will be taken directly to the airport, arriving about 12 midday. If your onward flight is late in the evening, we can suggest a hotel near the airport, where you can book a day room (at extra cost).
Starting from the horse safari base on the outskirts of Arusha Town, the area lies at an altitude of 1,400m above sea level, which offers an ideal climate for horses and riding. The stables have a magnificent view of Mount Meru, with Mount Kilimanjaro itself emerging to the north on a clear day.
Tanzania lies just south of the equator and on the whole enjoys a tropical climate. There are two rainy seasons, the short and the long rains. The long rains, called Masika, fall from mid-March to May, and the shorter rains, called Mvuli, fall from November to mid-January. The cooler climate is during the dry season and lasts from May to October.
Being close to the equator, and with an altitude of approximately 1,400 m (4,600 ft), the temperature is relatively consistent.
We have been very spoilt by the Kaskazi safari which was just outstanding. Great game, serious comfort, excellent friendly staff and lots of fast riding. We had such a blast! What an incredible experience.
