South Africa - Horizon Signature Safari
The Horizon Signature Safari is the best of everything to offer at Horizon Lodge, which has been one of our more popular holidays for many years. It is a fixed date seven night safari – Sunday to Sunday – and includes all the great riding on offer at Horizon but also riding through to and staying at Bellevue Plains & Camp Davidson.
Over the course of the seven night safari you will get to see all parts of the 15,000-acre reserve using carefully planned routes which take into account all the game hotspots and interesting natural features. Species typically seen include the following: giraffe, hippo, cape buffalo, eland, zebra, sable, roan, kudu, impala, waterbuck, red hartebeest, nyala, tsessebe, blue wildebeest, blesbuck, bushbuck, ostrich, baboon, vervet monkey, warthog and jackal. Occasionally seen are crocodile, brown hyena, serval, duiker, bush pig, steenbuck and reedbuck. These are all beautiful animals and a privilege to observe in their natural environment.
As well as game viewing you will have fun activities such as splashy canters, swimming with the horses, playing polocrosse and popping over a series of natural obstacles on the way to a spectacular sundowner spot.
You stay a total of five nights at Horizon Lodge, one night under canvas at Camp Davidson and one night at one of the lovely lodges on Bellevue Plains.
For the Horizon Signature Safari riders should be competent at walk, trot and canter in the outdoors and fit for up to four hours in the saddle. If the guides feel that a guest is not able to join the safari, then alternative rides from Horizon Lodge will be organised.
There are over 90 horses at Horizon - Boerperds, Friesians, Anglo-Arabs, Thoroughbreds as well as many other breeds. There will be the possibility of trying different horses on the nights you are based from Horizon Lodge.
The tack is simple English style bridles with South African Trail saddles.
On this safari, you spend a total of five nights at Horizon Lodge, one night at Camp Davidson and one night at one of Bellevue Plain's lodges.
Horizon Lodge has been tastefully refurbished over the years while retaining all its old charm. With no television or newspapers, this is the perfect spot to get away completely. A colonial-styled veranda overlooks the lake providing a good spot for relaxing with a drink whilst absorbing the beautiful surroundings and enjoying the company of friends. The jetty on the lake can be used as a sunbathing spot, and there is also a swimming pool in the garden for you to relax beside.
At Horizon guests on the Signature Safari normally stay in Lakeside and one of the three rooms of the Hippo Suite. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms and can be booked as twins or doubles.
At Camp Davidson you stay in a canvas tent sited on decking and nestled amongst the sandstone ridges overlooking the valleys. There are comfortable beds made up with sheets and duvets. Each tent also has an en-suite bathroom. There is a pool at Camp Davidson which is a good way to cool off after a hot ride.
Bellevue Plains is a private game reserve which borders Horizon. You will stay at one of the two small private lodges on the reserve.
The itinerary runs Sunday to Sunday throughout the year. The maximum is eight riders. Please call us to check availability for any of the dates below.

TRANSFERS Shared transfers at set times are £75.00 per person each way (£82.00 in 2027).
The transfer will leave and return to Johannesburg airport.
Your flight should be scheduled to arrive into Johannesburg by 09:45 at the latest and an earlier arrival time will be even safer. The shared group transfer departs at 11:00. For the return journey to Johannesburg, the shared transfer leaves the lodge at 13:00 and your flight must depart after 19:30.
If your flight is delayed, then a private transfer (extra cost) will need to be arranged and you will likely have to wait for a vehicle to be sent. To minimise the risk of flight delays spoiling your holiday you may wish to consider arriving into Johannesburg one day before the safari is due to start.
In the heart of the Waterberg Plateau, a few hours drive north of Johannesburg. Nearest airport is Johannesburg.
