Canada - Yukon - Grizzly Ride
The Grizzly Ride is a true adventure, heading out with a small group of riders to explore the mountains and valleys of the Yukon Territory. This trip is without vehicle support, all food, camping gear and personal baggage is carried by pack-horses. While comforts are limited the rewards are the spectacular scenery and encounters with the wildlife that inhabit this pristine wilderness.
You are unlikely to see any another people or signs of habitation during this expedition, the only exception being some abandoned trapper cabins. Wildlife viewing is a key part of this ride and there will be time to stop and make the most of the experience. You are likely to come across grizzly, moose and caribou as well as a range of other animals native to the Yukon.
Your guide has lived and worked in these mountains for decades, sometimes for months at a time with only her horses and dogs for support. She has a huge amount of experience in navigating this country and is eager to share her love for this wild and beautiful place.
For this trail you should be comfortable riding across uneven country and fit enough to spend long hours in the saddle. This horse adventure will be at a walking pace due to the pack horses and, at times, difficult terrain.
These trail rides are not suitable for children. Teenagers who are competent and confident riders may be considered if booked as part of a private group.
The horses are hardy and surefooted, fit for the mountains and rugged terrain and will reliably carry you on the trail. They range in height from 14.2hh to 16.2hh. On some of the steep ascents and descents it may be necessary to get off and lead the horses on foot.
Assistance is always available but you are encouraged to care of your own horse (saddling, grooming etc.) and involved in learning the techniques of horse packing.
The tack and riding is Western style.
Your base camp at the start and end of the pack trip is simple log cabins with a sleeping platform above a central seating area. There is electricity for lighting and charging phones only. Please note that sleeping arrangements in the cabins may be mixed sex. Some cabins have inside showers and composting toilets others have outside toilets and showers. There is also a wood fired sauna at the base camp.
Single cabins are not available.
On the trail you stay in two person tents. Guests will usually have a single tent at no supplement unless they have requested to share or have booked as a couple.
Riders are welcome to help with the camp chores: pitching tents, gathering firewood, fetching water, washing up, grooming, saddling/unsaddling the horses and packing up camp.
Set arrival and departure dates.

Yukon has a dry, continental climate. The trips take place in Yukon's summer which are usually warm with low humidity, long daylight hours and day time temperatures often in the 20s°C. The peak summer period being mid-May to September.
As you are in the mountains the weather can change quickly. Sudden rain showers can occur at any time so good quality waterproofs are essential. The nights can also be cold so extreme weather sleeping bags are recommended. A detailed packing list will be provided prior to departure.
Whole trip was beyond my expectations, the infinite beauty of the Yukon was mesmerising.
Very lucky with sunny weather and change in autumn colours and Northern Lights. We had a grizzly bear in camp one morning, a situation which Deb and Emerson dealt with very safely , professionally , and knowledgeably.
