Iceland Golden CircleThere is no better way to visit the hot springs area of Geysir and the Golden Waterfall of Gullfoss than by riding through the lovely countryside of south Iceland. On some days your guides lead spare horses, whilst other days are more challenging as the spare horses will travel with you as a loose herd as you cross the highland moor of Hrunaheði.

For those who have less time, a short break is also available in this area. On the Gullfoss-Geysir Special (five nights/four days riding) you join the first four days of the Golden Circle tour, returning to Reykjavik on the Thursday morning (arriving at about 10:30), whilst the rest of the group continue on the Golden Circle Tour.

The Icelandic horse is a pure-bred descendant of those brought to Iceland by the Vikings over a thousand years ago. Horses remain an important part of Icelandic culture; they are used on remote farms to round up livestock and are still the best means of getting around in many parts of the island. Although small (the average height is 13hh to 14hh), the Icelandic is a powerful horse with great stamina and strength of character.

Iceland horse and riderWhat makes the Icelandic Horse extra special is its fourth gait, the tölt, which is comparable to a running walk. Most riders can master it fairly quickly; it's fast, comfortable and enables the horse to cover great distances.

These trails are suitable for intermediate riders and are ideal for families or groups of mixed abilities. General fitness is important due to the sometimes long hours in the saddle and fast pace of the ride.

Riders are expected to care for their horse (grooming and tacking up) but help is always on hand should you need it.

The riding style is English.

Hard hats are mandatory.

You stay in three different farmhouse accommodations in two and four bed rooms, with made up beds. Bathrooms are shared. Single rooms (with shared facilities) may be available on certain dates at a supplement.

A support vehicle goes ahead carrying personal gear.

Réttarholt Guesthouse is located on the edge of the highlands in the small village of Árnes. There are five rooms compromising of a total 24 beds. The guesthouse has four toilets and three showers (which are in a separate building). There is no WiFi available.

Close to the river Hvítá, Hvítárdalur Farm is on two floors with good views over the farm and the herd of horses. There are 24 beds, two toilets and two showers. WiFi is available.

Myrkholt is located just between Gullfoss Waterfall and the hot spring Geysir. There are eight rooms with 34 beds, four toilets and eight showers. WiFi is also available.

Weather & Climate

The climate in Iceland is milder than its name and latitude suggests. However, the weather can change very quickly, especially in the mountains, going from warm and sunny to freezing cold in a few hours, and it is often very windy. Therefore, you must be prepared for all types of weather. In the summer months of June and July there are 24 hours of daylight.

Guest Review

All good. I had the most amazing time; travelling alone wasn't an issue. Our hosts were really informative and friendly. I'll be going back!

This is a great introduction to riding in Iceland and such fun! There's nothing quite like sightseeing on horseback.

My Top Tip

Be prepared for long hours of fast riding at a 'tölt'.
