Accessible only by horse or foot, you will be riding through some of the most varied and often demanding terrain in the Sierra Nevada and El Marquesado mountains.
This ride circles the Sierra Nevada mountain range following some of the highest bridle paths on the Spanish Peninsula at an altitude of 1,600 to over 3,000 m. Following a combination of forestry tracks, bridle paths, old droving routes and Moorish irrigation channels you cover approximately 30 to 40 km per day and ride for between 7 to 9 hours each day.
The El Marquesado has some very long days and quite a bit of leading downhill on two of the days. You must have a good level of overall and riding fitness. This ride is for repeat guests only. For less challenging itineraries in the Sierra Nevada mountains, check out our Contraviesa and Alpujarra Rides.

The horses are Andalucian and Andalucian crosses and have all been schooled by their owner and your guide Dallas Love. They are fit, surefooted and responsive with the classic good nature of the breed, enjoying their work and a pleasure to ride.
The horses are usually ridden in English bridles and each horse will also have their own saddle. Normally these are an English style general purpose/endurance type of saddle, and are very comfortable. You are expected to tack up and groom your horse, although assistance is available if you need help.
You need a reasonable level of fitness and also to be fit for walking. You also need to be able to mount from the ground from both sides of the horse.
On some of the very steep descents it is necessary to lead the horses and these rides are not for those who suffer from vertigo
During the ride one night is spent in a high mountain refuge, the other 6 nights in comfortable village hotels (some with pools).
Your luggage is taken ahead for you by vehicle and left at reception. We recommend packing light as you will have to carry your own luggage up to your room.

This ride is in the Sierra Nevada and El Marquesad mountains of southern Spain.
Due to the altitude, the sun is very strong and it is essential to use sun protection all year. In the evening the temperature drops and even during the summer months a light jumper or jacket is required.
A lot of walking due to the terrain but we were so busy looking at the stunning scenery it didn't matter and there were still plenty of opportunities for canters. Lovely and very fit horses. I have now done two trips with In The Saddle and I can't fault a single thing. A really wonderful trip. The scenery was stunning and varied every day. Looking at the itinerary I thought it would be tough to have such long days but the week just flew past. It was really an epic trip and riding through those mountains with Dallas and her brother was a really magical experience. I wish I was still there!

The horses are lovely to ride and Dallas is so interesting and full of stories.
