This trail ride takes you into the unique landscape of the Doñana National Park in the south west of Spain. A UNESCO World Heritage Site this special place has many different ecosystems – marshes, lagoons, pine forests, sand dunes and miles of unspoilt white beaches on the Atlantic Coast. These varied habitats are home to many bird and mammal species. Another highlight of the trail ride is visiting the village of El Rocio. This is a “horse town” where cars must give way to horses and most houses have a stable and tie-up outside so that friends can visit each other on horseback.
The ride is offered by Doñana Dressage which was founded by José Manuel and his family. In his early years he studied with a dressage master and at the same time trained as an engineer with a focus on the environment. After working for a few years in Doñana National Park José Manuel decided to focus on his passion for horses and so he returned to training both horses and riders. The trail rides offer the opportunity to ride their well trained horses through the National Park.
There are about 20 well-schooled Andalusians, PRE (Pura raza Espanola), Lusitanos as well as crosses (some with a little Arab blood). At the stables there are mares, geldings and stallions available to ride.
The horses are ridden in traditional handmade Spanish Vaquera saddles with saddlebags. These are designed to be comfortable for many hours in the saddle. Dressage saddles are also available if preferred. The horses are dressage trained (some to Grand Prix level) and are therefore very responsive to their riders. The horses used on the trail ride are selected for their calm nature and are used to the terrain in the national park.
Riding is on sandy tracks most of the time. The pace will be mostly at walk but there will be several trots and canters daily.
Riders must be secure and happy at all paces on forward going horses. It is also important to be riding fit as there are 6 - 7 hours in the saddle each day.
The accommodation is in a newly renovated villa just a short distance from the stables. Each evening you return to the main house and the following morning you head back out to meet the horses.
The main hall is an enormous open space with a dining area, comfortable seating, fireplace and open plan kitchen.
Upstairs there are five twin rooms with en-suite spacious bathrooms. These rooms can also be made up as doubles with the beds pushed together. In addition there is one single room.
Breakfast is usually a simple affair with fresh bread, eggs from their own chickens and seasonal fruits and juices. Other meals are prepared and cooked by a chef who uses local and quality ingredients. Meals are a mix of traditional Spanish dishes alongside international cuisine. Whilst out on the trail rides a picnic lunch will be brought out to meet you and in the evenings a lighter meal will be served.
There are set dates throughout the year and additional dates may be available on request for groups. Please ask for details.
The rides require a minimum of four people to confirm.

Doñana Dressage is located on the edge of El Rocío in the province of Huelva. The town is right on the edge of the Doñana National Park.
Daytime temperatures vary from about 15°C from November to March and from 30°C and above during June, July and August. Rainfall is very light with virtually no rain from the beginning of May to the end of September. However it can rain in winter months with most rainfall in November and early December and again in March/April.
The town of El Rocío is an amazing place to ride through. Horses are at the very centre of the town and even have right of way along the sandy roads!
If you get chance I would absolutely recommend visiting one of the bars in El Rocío - they are very horse friendly!
