This tropical trail ride starts and finishes at Pousada do Outiero, a beach resort on the Atlantic coast. From here, explore on horseback the pretty coastline and quiet villages of Bahia. A variety of terrain awaits, from beaches and mangroves, to cliff-top paths and rainforest.
From Pousada do Outiero, ride north to Trancoso, one of the earliest Portuguese settlements in Brazil. Colourful guesthouses, bars and shops line the wide main street which is a car-free zone. Hundreds of lanterns light the trees at night.
You also explore the tiny village of Caraiva, surrounded by mangroves. The village is so far off the beaten path that it only recently acquired mains electricity. Caraiva is the perfect spot if you are looking for somewhere quiet to relax and unwind.
You ride at a walk, trot and canter. The pace of the ride varies from walk on the narrow forest trails and in the deeper sand to a faster pace where the terrain and footing allow.
The riding is Western style with a relaxed seat and a loose rein. The horses mostly go in trail saddles and bridles with curb bits. There are some English saddles, but they may not fit every horse.
You should be a competent rider capable at all paces and confident enough to try a slightly different riding style.
The horses are a mixture of polo ponies, Criollos and Mangalarga Marchador crosses. They are well-mannered, sure footed and obedient.
Accommodation during the ride is comprised of two guesthouses and a hotel.
Spend the first two and the final night at Pousada do Outeiro, a hotel situated on the cliffs above Espelho Beach. The guestrooms have en-suite shower-rooms, a mini-bar and seating area. The main hotel area has a dining room, bar and lounge area with chairs and hammocks. Outside there is swimming pool and decking area with sun-loungers.
Your third night is spent in Trancoso, at either Pousada Mar a Vista or Pousada do Bosque. Both are comfortable guesthouses very close to the main street.
The fourth and fifth nights are at Cores do Mar in Caraiva, a colourful beach-front guesthouse set in pretty gardens. The bedrooms have en-suite facilities and some of the rooms have a deck with a hammock.
Below are the scheduled rides. Additional dates may be possible for groups of two or more from March to June and August to mid-December. Please enquire for further details.

Bahia is located in the north-east of Brazil on the Atlantic Coast.
Bahia has a tropical climate, with temperatures usually between 26ºC and 30ºC.
The state’s Atlantic Coast usually stays hot all year long, but on the Southern Coast where our ride is located, it can get cooler during the winter months (June-September) with temperatures dropping to around 18ºC.
No matter how hot the days may get, there is usually a sea breeze to cool things down.
I have never experienced such joy while riding a horse - I literally had tears in my eyes during several moments.

Cantering along the water's edge with the sun on your back, watching your horse swimming across an estuary, stopping in a clearing to drink coconut water and relaxing in your hammock after a day in the saddle - all can be experienced on the Bahia Beach ride.
Try some of the local specialties like pastels moqueca (fish stew) and cheese bread during your stay.
