Brazil - Amazon Delta
About the same size and shape as Switzerland, Marajo is the largest fluvial island in the world. It is an unusual place, where houses are built on stilts, the local police patrol on water buffalo and dragonflies grow to the size of small birds.
Our journey takes you across rural buffalo and cattle farms and on into the jungle, where the forest canopy is home to monkeys and abundant bird-life. The rivers and streams teem with life and there is a huge diversity of flora and fauna.
Marajo Island is not on the main tourist trail, so do not expect many luxuries. This trip is best suited to relaxed souls who are looking for an adventure in an unique part of the world.
You should be confident on a horse at all paces. The pace is varied to include walk, jog (sitting trot) and canter.
This ride features the Marajoara, a local breed descended from the Portuguese horses introduced in the early 18th century. They are small (c. 12-15hh), but are tough and well-adapted to the extreme Amazon environment.
The horses are ridden in typical local saddles and bridles.
Water buffalo, which are also ridden during the trip, are an integral part of the island culture and there are opportunities to see the local cowboys work with horses and buffaloes.

Marajo Island is located on the equator in northern Brazil, at the mouth of the Amazon.
There is little seasonal variation in temperature in Marajo as it lies on the equator. Daytime temperatures are consistently in the low 30's ºC all year round. The temperature drops a little overnight, but evenings are still warm.
Rides are scheduled to run in the drier months, May to August. But due to the location, there is the possibility of showers at any time of year.
A wonderful opportunity to explore one of the world's most majestic deltas on horseback.
Pack a high capacity memory stick as there are plenty of photographic opportunities during the ride.
