Ride Report
In November 2018 I embarked on an amazing trip around South Africa, starting at the Wild Coast and finishing in Cape Town. From Heathrow, I travelled to East London Airport and spent a night at Kei Mouth – sussing out the area and meeting the team. I then joined a full seven night Wild Coast Adventure Trail – guided by Mel, backed up by Shell and Katie as driver. We had some long hours in the saddle, some fast gallops and some river crossings. It wouldn’t suit nervous, novice or unfit riders. So, if you aren’t sure of your riding ability for the Wild Coast Adventure Trail then you should chose the Kei River Trail which is mainly based at the horses’s base at Kei Mouth, but includes a three day/two night trail along the coast as far as Wavecrest.
The accommodation along the coast is not five star and if you are used to really smart accommodation and super fast service then you might find it a bit basic or become frustrated by the speed of waitress. But the locations are stunning and once you relax into Africa time then you cannot ask for more. Some of the hotels have pools and the opportunity for spa treatments. I then travelled to Cape Town and spent four nights at Cape Winelands Riding. This was the perfect combination and it was lovely to finish my time in Africa riding around the beautiful Winelands, tasting and learning about local wine and indulging in gourmet food each night.
