Lassithi Trek

In June 2018 I stayed at the Velani Country Hotel which is used for five nights of the Lassithi Trek. It is a lovely base to return to after a long day in the saddle. On the other two nights, riders on the trail stay at guesthouses on the Lassithi Plateau and the southern coast.

I didn’t ride the route for the trek itself but instead explored by vehicle and rode from the stables. Much of the trail follows rural tracks through the mountains, which means there are plenty of opportunities for cantering. It must be said that in some places there are steep sections so it’s necessary to get off and lead on these occasions.

The horses used on this trail are from the Odysseia Stables, which are only a short walk from the hotel. There is a good mix available to suit a variety of different riders but due to the terrain and pace of the ride, everyone participating must be confident at walk, trot and canter.
