The Accommodation
Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?
The accommodation in bunk rooms was fine and experiencing the company of gauchos added to the enjoyment. Adolfo, Laura and Thomas and the international volunteers made every effort to make us comfortable. We offered help on numerous occasions and only rarely accepted. Your instruction to follow what the guides said was followed - especially when Adolfo said "I'll take your horse, you get your wet clothes off and sit there (by the fire) and drink tea". A welcome instruction after a long, wet day in the saddle! Food was simple, plentiful and tasty despite a limited amount space/weight on the pack horses.
Before Your Holiday
Did you have all of the information you needed to:
How could we improve the quality of pre-holiday information that we send?
The packing list for the holiday was too long. The packing list provided by Centro Hipico just before the ride was more realisic regarding what could be fitted into a 35l bag for the pack horses. I left a lot at La Posta. This might be important as the flights into Ushuaia are weight limited.
At that time of year it was important to be thoroughly water proof. Other riders had tips about what helps. Surgical gloves are light weight and provided an extra layer of insulation under gloves as well as keeping hands dry. Plastic bags between socks and boots kept the feet dry. Double packing with extra plastic bags or dry bags kept most things dry Saddle bags do go under water.
How could we improve the way we handled your booking and payment?
All as expected after several rides with In The Saddle.
Do you have any other feedback for us?
Would I recommend - yes, but cautiously. It is a challenging ride due to the conditions, not the riding itself. The horses were what made the ride. A rider would need to be confident in the horse and not try to 'ride' it. Participants in the ride need to be able to 'rough it'. Access to showers very limited and pit loos do not suit all. Any wipes and toiletries should be organic and compostable to keep the environment clean and green.
Anon who has been on 6 In The Saddle rides. A challenging ride: terrain, weather and dirt | The horses were business like, know their work and do it well. It was important to have trust in the horse as going through deep mud, along cliff edge paths, steep slopes, over cobbles, sea edge rock shelf and through deep water they needed to be able to make their way without a rider interfering. My horse was able to pick a route through the marshes better than many. Any disappointment re the pace of ride was on account of other riders, not the staff of Centro Hipico.
[ITS replies: Thank you for your feedback. We are looking into your comments regarding pace, although this isn't a fast ride due to the terrain and use of pack-horses. We are pleased that overall you enjoyed this tough, expedition ride at the End of the World.]
