Damara Ride - Namibia

Damara Elephant Safari

5 star rating   4 July 2026

Vivien who has been on 46 In The Saddle rides. Stunning scenery | This is the third Namibia horse safari I have completed so knew what to expect. There were many long, frequent canters that were wonderful to do, especially when the terrain opened up during the second half of the ride. We also had some super canters on the beach on the last day as the tide was out (lucky timing).

Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?

The food was absolutely delicious and amazing what Willem and Elizabeth can produce in black pots on an open fire. Some of the nights were seriously cold with strong winds, heavy dew and fog so I did make use of some tents that were put up as we got closer to the coast on the latter nights (missed out on the stars above my head but a bit more sheltered!).

Do you have any other feedback for us?

Due to the popularity of these rides, I booked nearly two years in advance in order to get a saddle and was a bit worried I might have changed my mind about doing this challenging ride when the time came. However, it was wonderful. The scenery was jaw-dropping (especially the Messum Crater), the group of riders was really good fun with lots of laughs, and although the weather sometimes didn't play ball, it didn't take away from the enjoyment (and the tents helped!). It's really worth doing these rides if you are prepared - you get a real sense of achievement having done it and so good to be completely off grid and just relying on yourself and your fellow travellers (horses and humans).
