The Great Trek - Kyrgyzstan

The Great Trek

5 star rating   19 August 2022

Suzy who has been on 8 In The Saddle rides. An amazing adventure. Quite demanding with high rewards | The horses all looked really well although many had scars from tack rubbing but this may well have not been the current owner. Life is tough in Kyrgyzstan and it is important to leave behind our western softee approach to loving our horses as part of our family. It is clear that Helene care very much about the welfare of her horses.

Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?

As a declared non-wheat eater it was often difficult to avoid the pasta and bread that forms the basis of the mountain diet. The salads and soups were lovely and the cook responded to the group request for less carbs! On the plus side I lost half a stone which is no bad thing!

Before Your Holiday

Did you have all of the information you needed to:

Plan and prepare for your holiday?

Feel comfortable about your transfers and what to expect?

How could we improve the quality of pre-holiday information that we send?

The main languages spoken were Russian and Kyrgyz which I was naturally prepared to not understand. The majority of the group and the guide were French speaking and I many times had to ask, ' What was the question? What was the instruction? as the English version was often forgotten. This was no major issue but I did feel occasionally that I had missed some interesting stuff but others in the group translated well for me.

How could we improve the way we handled your booking and payment?

Nothing. Thank you for bearing with the Covid delays and eventually getting me there!

Do you have any other feedback for us?

This is an amazing adventure in a part of the world that is so culturally and environmentally different to my home. I think there is an age and fitness limit as wild camping with few home comforts at high altitude wouldn't suit everyone. I loved the mountain river washing! Long hours in the saddle but equipment was really comfortable so no-one had any ill-effects.
[Becky from In The Saddle replies: Thank you very much for your feedback. It's a tough expedition and so it's great to hear you enjoyed the challenge.]
