Los Alamos - Spain

Experience Level

Villa Based Ride

4 star rating   2 June 2019

Rachel and her team seemed to look after the horses well and were very welcoming and happy to change horses as needed.
The riding described on the web site indicated later starts and riding some country trails. We started early every morning, it was not always hot, and no country trails so the forest riding was a bit repetative, the beach rides were great fun.
[ITS comment: We have followed this up with Los Alamos and they have told us that during your holiday there was extremely high winds which curtailed riding in the open countryside. Each day they have to assess the weather conditions before determining which route is taken and what the ride involves.]

Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?

The rooms were OK but very smelly and not that clean. Beds were comfortable.
The communal area was filthy, I had to clean the fridges and the dishwasher as they were visibly caked in dirt. The whole kitchen area needs a really good clean! the ceiling is depressing. There has been no effort made at all in the garden. The plastic chairs are dirty, the umbrellas are rotting, the outdoor table is unusable as it has not been cleaned or swept for months. I had to sweep an area clean to sit, though this was not pleasant as the chairs were not comfortable, around the pool there is only 1 umbrella provided for shade, there was a pile of broken debris in the corner, a broken umbrella and dirty old lilos, the pool is not particularly clean either.
As we had early rides there is a lot of time at the villa, the facilities need to be improved.
There was no 'al fresco' dining, not even attempted, a shame as we were in Spain and had to spend each evening meal in that depressing kitchen. The food was OK, but nothing Spanish at all. Breakfast was similar to being in a backpackers hostel. Dinner seemed to be an occasion to be got through as quickly as possible so the hosts could escape!
Lunches at local bars were excellent.
No offer of an evening out elsewhere as suggested in the brochure.
Perhaps someone from In the Saddle should go and look at the facilities again!
[ITS comment: We have visited Los Alamos in April 2019 and many clients who visit each week, many of them rebooking for the following year. We have forwarded your comments to Los Alamos for their attention and we have been told that the gale force winds for most of the week meant they could not safely put umbrellas up around the pool area. The wind also constantly blew sand and leaves from the gardens and surrounding area into the pool and this did lead to sand covering the bottom of the pool. The sand has no effect on the cleanliness of the water. Once the gales stopped the bottom of the pool was completely cleaned and is now pristine again. We are sorry that there was a smell in your bathroom but we understood that this was resolved once they had been informed.
We are very disappointed when any guest has complaints about any aspect of our holidays. Thankfully negative comments about our holidays are very rare, however we and Los Alamos take all criticism seriously and we will do our best to change and improve.]

Do you have any other feedback for us?

As this is the best selling holiday with many return visitors I suspect that the villa owners are becoming somewhat complacent!
