Wait A Little - South Africa

Ride and Dine Safari

4 star rating   23 November 2019

The riding was described as pacy with jumps. It wasn't which gave us one extremely awkward day when the issue was raised and dealt with aggressively and in a very confrontational way by the owners.

I am unsure exactly what happened but to me that day...on an expensive holiday …. was wasted and deeply unpleasant

I don’t expect hosts to shout at their guests! I do expect a holiday to match descriptions

Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?

The accommodation at Wait A Little was marred by the extreme amount of insects at lunch and dinner. For a ‘wine and dine’ I don’t expect flies on every dish! Nor do I want dung beetles and moths and every other sort of insect made at dinner.
I appreciate that insects are common but this was extreme. It didn’t occur at the other lodges.
There were no real facilities to cover food other than one or two net covers and we suspect tipping waste out by the dining areas attracted the thick buzz of flies. At this level the option of getting insects out or eating inside away from them would be expected. We were half in and half out with no protection at breakfast, tea and dinner and outside with food served outside at lunchtime.

[Olwen from In The Saddle writes - Wait a Little have explained that just prior to the group's arrival they had the first really heavy rain of the season which afterwards, for a couple of days, brings a really huge amount of insects. The food at lunchtime should have been covered with nets and in the evening it is brought out already plated, although of course an insect can still land on it while you are eating. This is unfortunately just something that is particularly bad at this time of year (late October/November)]

The other two lodges were superb .. With a ‘normal’ level of insects and Robin’s cooking was wonderful.

How could we improve the quality of pre-holiday information that we send?

It seems to be pretty standard holiday to holiday! Not sure what else you could have added tho!!!

How could we improve the way we handled your booking and payment?

All OK thank you. And your swift assistance when the unpleasantness emerged was much appreciated.

Do you have any other feedback for us?

I did ask for smaller horses but they kept getting bigger. We had no horse choice at all! All the horses were lovely though and the standard they were turned out to was exemplary thanks to the stable manager and Ray. They also took a huge amount of care to ensure girths and stirrups etc were right.
We did struggle a bit to know what we were doing at times! We jumped from tracking to moving to tracking and from animal to animal without much clarity!
