Ultimate Uruguay - Uruguay

Ultimate Uruguay

5 star rating   27 February 2019

Sue who has been on 14 In The Saddle rides. Ultimate Uruguay | The weather was unusually hot so quite rightly there were fewer canters than expected and a lot of walking. But it was great to ride in so many different environments - tracks and lanes, forests, beaches, sand dunes, fields and wetlands. The wetlands were challenging and fun. The horses in the middle section of the holiday were excellent - we had them for 5 days and I couldn't fault the buckskin Criolla I was given. Unfortunately the quality of the horses in the final two days wasn't so good. A number of our group, including me, were on horses with such strange confirmation, that they were quite uncomfortable at trot and canter. This was disappointing given the hotel where we stayed, Balcon del Abra, clearly considers itself a class place...but the horses were more used to walking in a line pony-trekking style than being ridden by relatively experienced people.

Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?

The hosts at all the accommodation were superb and made up for the occasional quirks in the hotels and estancias. However at the final place we stayed for 3 nights the hosts were nothing short of rude and unwelcoming. We were made to feel as if we weren't good enough to stay there and they tried to make our guide eat by himself in a room off the kitchen. During the rest of the trip he'd joined us at all the meals - given he was such an exceptionally good guide it was upsetting to see him treated this way. Fortunately he held his ground and was eventually allowed to join us. Although the hotel - Balcon del Abra - was lovely, the hosts let the place down and given this was a riding holiday, our guide had to push them to allow us to ride for more than 2 hours pony-trekking style. [ITS note: We are disappointed to hear how you felt whilst staying at Balcon del Abra. We will follow this up with our partners and thank you for highlighting this to us.]
