Castellare di Tonda - Italy

Experience Level

Castellare Train & Trail

5 star rating   14 July 2018

We rode 'school master' western quarter horses for lessons with Franco and Marco. Franco is expert instructor and his instruction (in Italian) was perfectly translated by Marco- who also instructs and takes the trail rides. We could not have been happier with the horses or the level of instruction. There is a large covered riding manege and a smaller round manege and we could see that all levels of rider experience were catered for by Franco and Marco and his team. We rode out on different horses that were steady but forward going and responsive. Rides were led by Marco or Alicia and in groups of 3 to 9 riders over the beautiful Tuscany terrain.

Castellare di Tonda is a 'resort and spa'. There is a central reception area with a large restaurant (all outdoor seating in the summer), a small shop for provisions and a bar. Over the surrounding area there are several rennovated Tuscan farm houses that are converted into self-contained apartments and we stayed in one of these, a few hundred yards away from the central reception area. Each farmhouse has a swimming pool and serves about 8 apartments. The stables were about 1/2 a mile walk away. Also on site was a golf-driving range and a Health Spa (which we did not visit on this occasion). Our holiday was half board - breakfast and dinner in the restaurant and we either had lunch in the bar, or bought provisions and made lunch in our apartment - which was perfectly equipped for self-catering. Apartments are well air-conditioned. On the 'day off' we were taken by car to the nearest station and took a train to Florence where we had a walking tour and lunch and enjoyed the sights. On another day we took a taxi to Montaione and enjoyed the views over the surrounding countryside.

Before Your Holiday

Did you have all of the information you needed to:

How could we improve the quality of pre-holiday information that we send?

The pre-holiday information is comprehensive and helpful - I cannot think of any omissions

How could we improve the way we handled your booking and payment?

Very satisfied with this. The 'In the Saddle' guide to our holiday contained all the information we needed - and might have wished for and it is greatly reassuring to see such attention to the details of our holiday.

Do you have any other feedback for us?

The 'resort and spa' nature of Castellare di Tonda is more than just horseriding and so lends itself to non-riders and family holidays but the horse riding facilities are nevertheless excellent. Cycling is popular - but the terrain is quite hilly. We had a transfer from the airport and did not miss having a car, but there are many places of interest that are just a short car journey away.

[ITS comment: We are so glad that you enjoyed your holiday!]
