Bottlenose Trail

5 star rating   18 November 2018

Jen who has been on 6 In The Saddle rides. Great value riding holiday on fantastic horses | All the horses were fantastic and very well schooled. They were all confident and calm, not one put a foot wrong even when presented with many barking dogs in the villages. They were happy and content, always eager to go in the mornings but still very willing at the end of the day. A herd of well cared for horses. Tack was comfortable and in good condition but no saddle bags are provided or cords for tying clothes to the saddle. We ended up tying clothes round our waists which is not ideal.

Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?

The accommodation exceeded my expectations, on choosing the more basic accommodation on the bottlenose trail I was expecting basic accommodation but it was far from this. All hotels were very clean with good facilities. They are all a short drive from the horses at the beginning and end of the day. Monte das faias was definitely my favourite as it had great character and the owners were very nice. None of the hotel rooms had kettles though which would have been nice for a cup of tea whilst waiting for 8pm dinners.
The food all week was excellent with a nice variety of dishes. I am vegetarian but i eat fish and this was easily accommodated. Lunchtimes had plenty of bread, cheese, and salad with Dennis bbqing meat and fish on alternate days. As the ride details say, vegans cannot be accommodated and strict vegetarians may struggle.

How could we improve the quality of pre-holiday information that we send?

All good

How could we improve the way we handled your booking and payment?

My friend and I had to ask for a second final invoice as we had still been charged the small group supplement (we booked early)despite the ride being full, i am sure this was an oversight but im glad i noticed!! (ITS comment: Small group supplements normally apply until closer to departure in case of cancellations. We will always refund them if possible.)

Do you have any other feedback for us?

The first days riding was over six hours and we enjoyed quite a few canters and trots all of which were much longer than those I'm used to in the UK. I loved the challenge of the first day. Subsequent days were shorter and with fewer trots and canters, around 5 hrs with 3-5 canters each day. The last day though was very short with only a couple of canters and we were back at our accommodation at 2pm. I would have liked more hours riding on the last day although I appreciate the team needed to transport the horses back to base at the end. There was a long wait from 2pm until 8pm dinner.
There were 11 riders in our group and no backstop so unless your horse could walk out fast enough to be in the front three horses there wasn't much opportunity to speak with Miguel during the ride.
Overall this was a brilliant holiday and Miguel and Dennis looked after our needs very well all week. The horses are a credit to the care and schooling from the team. I very much wanted to take Adonis home at the end of the week. The scenery is very interesting and I enjoyed the different landscapes found inland contrasting with those of the coast. I loved the beach, despite the sand being too deep for fast riding. Good food, good company topped off a brilliant week.
