Quinta do Rol - Portugal

Experience Level

Quinta do Rol

5 star rating   24 March 2018

This is dressage training of the highest standard, riding great horses who are training you almost as much as Pedro and Gonzales, the gentlemen who actually tell you what to do. Or try to do. Nearly all of our fellow riders were way ahead of us in terms of expertise, but this made no difference - all anyone wanted was for us to do our best, and get better.

Everything about Quinta is first class - Rita, the owner/manager and force of nature behind the estancia only does things full tilt, with amazing attention to detail. So the Centro de Hipico mirrors the facilities you will see at the national Portuguese riding school, with an amazing string of beautifully schooled, pedigree Lusitanos that, astonishingly, they allow guests to ride.

I’m not surprised more than half the guests were on second or third visits. The training is real - with two hour-long sessions every day I haven’t worked so hard since my teens - and it was worth every sweaty minute.

Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?

The accommodation is lovely - comfy beds with excellent linens and sitting rooms for hanging out. The dining is family-style rather than restaurant-based, and the food is yummy, locally sourced and while you would be welcome to eat yourself spherical, presented in portions that are less intimidatingly huge than the Portuguese norm. The estate’s wines are also excellent (of course).

Before Your Holiday

Did you have all of the information you needed to:

Plan and prepare for your holiday?

Feel comfortable about your transfers and what to expect?

How could we improve the quality of pre-holiday information that we send?

The cost of a transfer to/from the airport is really pretty high. Hiring a car proved to be both a money-saver and a good idea, as there’s lots to see and do in the area, and Pedro will schedule lessons to give you time for a bit of sightseeing and sampling of the excellent local restaurants.

How could we improve the way we handled your booking and payment?

We are happy, loyal customers, despite being based in the USA.

Do you have any other feedback for us?

The viewing area is a real treat, and becomes a place of real camaraderie and laughter. They are very welcoming to outside guests, happily adding people for dinner, and arranging extra lessons or outrides on request.
