Highland Expeditions - Iceland

Kjölur - North to South

5 star rating   4 August 2018

Jane Foster who has been on 5 In The Saddle rides. Unique and challenging ride through area of stark and natural beauty. | During the course of the 6 day ride, I rode 10 different horses ,the majority of which were amazing. There were a few horses which were more difficult to ride particularly if you had not ridden Icelandic horses previously. I personally would of preferred for the pace to be slower at times ie some walking as the majority of the time we were going at a very fast pace and I would of liked more time to absorb the dramatic scenery particularly as we were not in a hurry to get anywhere. Most days we did not start riding until about 11am. The day across the lava field was an exception to this and I loved it.
We only walked if the ground was too rocky to trot. The horses were very fit and in good condition.
My experience as an endurance rider was of great assistance.
I was selected to ride with the herd at the front on one occasion which was a fantastic experience and it was a real privilege to watch Gustav and his team at work. I would have no hesitation in recommending this ride as it was a unique experience.

Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?

The accommodation was as described. Three of the nights we had rooms of 4 and the other nights varied from 6 to 12 in a room. Everyone was very considerate towards each other. Some of the top bunks are a bit precipitous .The loos and showers were of a good standard and the shower rota on a couple of nights was very helpful .The huts were clean and tidy and had the most amazing views. The catering was very good. You were able to buy beer and wine during the course of the week from the catering team.

How could we improve the quality of pre-holiday information that we send?

Some of the accommodation has changed so you may wish to update the information. On this trip they provided lunch boxes and water bottles. I would recommend using their waterproofs but you can take long coats. The saddle bags are quite small so you are limited as to what you can carry and we were not able to tie anything onto the saddles ie waterproofs etc. Face nets and insect repellent are a must. With these the flies are not a problem when on occasions they come out.Your what to take list is very useful. Suitcases and wheely bags can be taken and a soft bag
is not a necessity on this trip.

How could we improve the way we handled your booking and payment?

Nothing to add.
