Nomad Trails - Mongolia

Experience Level

Big Skies Horse Trail with Naadam Games

5 star rating   21 July 2017

Riding was great. We decided to switch horses after a few days and guides were very flexible. The horses are the most reliable horses I've ever ridden, fast gallops, long canters and super easy to control. Overall, very well behaved and the different way of riding (standing up in trot and canter) is easy to get used to.

Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?

Amazing what the cook managed to prepare on the campsites. it's a mix of western and Mongolian food, breakfast is western, picnic lunches always excellent. I wouldn't have minded a bit more asian flavour.

The gers are very comfy although it gets very cold at night, recommend to have a fire in your ger each night.

How could we improve the quality of pre-holiday information that we send?

It's all very detailed so no comments. I liked receiving the booklet with all info and phone numbers.

Do you have any other feedback for us?

Only feedback:
- Communication between In the Saddle and Nomadic Journeys. Filled out riding ability and all the insurance details for ItS but somehow it never reached NJ. Had to fill out all my details twice again during the trip (once for Naadam and once for riding). Also, first thing guides asked if we had ever sat on a horse before. [ITS NOTE: we do pass all riders details and insurance details onto the ride prior to guests arriving. We are looking into why the need was felt for the guides to request this information again].
- USD were actually only accepted in big tourist places. For going around, esp with Naadam, local currency in small notes is more useful.
- Naadam games: this was very much an organized group thing. I normally don't travel like that so had I known in advance I might have gone independently (following the guide with flag around with a big group was a bit strenuous at times). Good to mention on site that it'll be an organized group tour with packed schedule the entire day.
