The Ranch at Rock Creek - Montana

Ranch Stay

As a regular rider/competitor the riding experience was as I expected, laid back on mediocre horses with mediocre welfare. The views were breath taking, the wranglers were pleasant but there only to tack up etc and to be followed rather than to add information etc about where we were riding, albeit they were happy to answer questions etc. The bits were severe, as expected , not suitable for unstable riders. Shoes, for the first two days were loose, farrier came after we had commented! Horses stood, tacked up most of the day with no shelter from the flies and blazing sun! On the longer rides the horses were tugging to get to the water troughs which were empty or too foul to drink, poor, poor horses! I didn't feel happy riding them . The rodeo night was clearly their fun night, sadly not for the poor horses who had 'flank straps tightly pulled' in order to buck. Disgraceful ! Couldn't watch it. the other parts of the 'show' were slightly more acceptable. Then for some unknown reason, nobody wanted to explain, they chased the poor horses standing in the pens to make them really agitated. (In The Saddle - we are very sorry to read that there were elements of the horse welfare not acceptable to you. Rodeos are a highlight for many visitors to the USA, but we agree that they can appear harsh).

Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?

We were most impressed to be greeted by a 'real live cowboy 'at the airport.David was very helpful and friendly each time we saw him. We stayed in 'Dessinger' in Granite Lodge, it was small and poky and had no bath! It was however very clean and made up to feel cosy. The staff were all really helpful and friendly and every morning there was a log fire made up in the cosy sitting room at 6am!. The lunches and suppers were really good, as to be expected of Relais&Chataeu! The activities were well organised, we did feel however, instead of charging £45 to take guests into the local town it would be nicer to include it or make it more like an activity. They would get a gold star from the locals and from guests. The pool area, definitely needs to be addressed! It had 6 uneven and raised edging stones one end and generally not very clean. Nice it was 'au natural' but needs to be clean! Riding around on the bikes worked really well, they were well maintained etc. Overall we had a lot of fun, only marred by the lack of horse well being!

How could we improve the quality of pre-holiday information that we send?

To be fair Charlotte liased with you, not us but at Badminton we did ask one of you a question about activities at the ranch and we were told to sort it out direct with the ranch which we felt was not the most helpful. (In The Saddle - we are sorry for the confusion over this. When a booking is confirmed with the ranch, they allocate an Activities Counsellor to discuss and confirm your activities programme and the ranch prefer to do this directly with the guest).

How could we improve the way we handled your booking and payment?

Well, I dont know a name at 'In the saddle', that can't be good.

Do you have any other feedback for us?

Yes I would but would warn them about the lack of horse welfare.
