Shine Valley - Yukon

Pack Trip

The horses coped really well with very difficult terrain for over 200km. The horses were well mannered, responsive and very sure footed. My horse was stressed by bees in the ground taking off more than once. Six to seven hours in the saddle is hard for both horse and rider this is endurance riding, my seat saver and padded underwear were invaluable! The horses were groomed and checked for rubs daily. However, they did lose weight during the ride. Some nights the horses are free to graze with hobbles and long ropes but not every night. Limited food was available for the horses when tied up for the night and no access to water until the following morning. The western saddle, pads and bridles are in good condition. The saddle bags are huge for all the extra clothing and waterproof layers. This holiday is an excellent way to experience the true Yukon but do not underestimate the long hours in the saddle it is very tiring.

Do you have any comments about the accommodation and food?

The farm accommodation is excellent, warm, cosy with log burners, clean, homely and comfortable.
The tents are easy to assemble and enough for one each. However selecting your pitching spot can become competitive! Suitable bedding, mats and pillows are essential for a good sleep, the floor is cold so two layers are needed. My air bed was invaluable along with thermals, hat ,socks and tracksuit.
The food was always hot, varied and importantly filling. All food groups covered every day and always seconds available. Vegetarians were well catered for. The delivery of fresh food twice by plane is unique and very welcome. A lot of cake and chocolate consumed. We even caught 14 trout and grayling for supper at Rose lake. No need to supplement the diet. Hot drinks on arrival in camp as soon as possible with a sugar fix would be appreciated. Last day no actual lunch was provided just left overs, it was a long wait for the evening meal at the restaurant.

How could we improve the quality of pre-holiday information that we send?

Packing light 16kg is really hard especially when your luggage on the pack horse is weighed!
Clearer advice on what is essential for camping. We all over packed. A definitive list?
Suggested pillows and base sleeping pad are provided by the farm in the Yukon.
The saddle bags on the horse take all your riding layers and wet weather gear.

How could we improve the way we handled your booking and payment?

Booking the holiday took 3 years due to limited trips available that matched my summer holiday break.
Tried to book in 2015 and 2016. Finally for August 2017 we booked May 2016 as soon as the dates were released. This is a popular holiday with limited trips due to the arrival of snow. Plan ahead.
