The Riding was great - just perfect for my standard and fitness level. Christina was careful to give us a lesson on the first morning to judge our ability and I think got it spot on! Our only observation would be that some of the day trippers which joined our rides were not given the same rigorous test and were often not up to coping with the length and speed of the rides and were not equipped riding in trainers and jogging bottoms! Something to be looked at perhaps from Christina and Claude's point of view!

All horses very well trained and easy to ride. Comfy saddle too. Bulgaria is a great place to ride - lots of open fields and tracks.

Well schooled horses each with individual personalities. Stunning scenery and good riding on a mixture of terrains with wide open spaces and no fences. The horses were all forward going even after a long day. Saddles were comfortable.

Riding was lovely most of the time. I did find the road work a little tedious, but the views and tracks soon made up for the time on the road. The saddles were comfortable and the company was great. The guides were polite and good with the horses.

The horses are very good and social. They fit for good for experienced and less experienced riders.
At the beginning of your travel, they will give you a horse which you choose and which one you described.

As a regular rider/competitor the riding experience was as I expected, laid back on mediocre horses with mediocre welfare. The views were breath taking, the wranglers were pleasant but there only to tack up etc and to be followed rather than to add information etc about where we were riding, albeit they were happy to answer questions etc. The bits were severe, as expected , not suitable for unstable riders. Shoes, for the first two days were loose, farrier came after we had commented! Horses stood, tacked up most of the day with no shelter from the flies and blazing sun! On the longer rides the horses were tugging to get to the water troughs which were empty or too foul to drink, poor, poor horses! I didn't feel happy riding them . The rodeo night was clearly their fun night, sadly not for the poor horses who had 'flank straps tightly pulled' in order to buck. Disgraceful ! Couldn't watch it. the other parts of the 'show' were slightly more acceptable. Then for some unknown reason, nobody wanted to explain, they chased the poor horses standing in the pens to make them really agitated. (In The Saddle - we are very sorry to read that there were elements of the horse welfare not acceptable to you. Rodeos are a highlight for many visitors to the USA, but we agree that they can appear harsh).

The terrain was a bit challenging because of all the torns and bushes. I would recommend a long light sweater or similar to cover the arms from scratches. Was hoping for a little more speed, but again terrain too challenging. Nice views from the mountains and very beautiful places to stay for the night. Very good route from day 3 and to the end of the holiday. Guides were very helpful and nice. They care much about both the group and make sure the horses are doing well at all time.

On every level the horses are fantastic, they really look after the guests judging who they have riding them. The horses really know their job as working animals but also enjoy a good few gallops on the trails. The gaucho takes you somewhere new on the farm everyday and gets you working from day one, anyone who has an inner cowboy would love every second.

My horse was incredible and a fantastic match for my novice ability... the most well behaved and highly/well trained horse I've ever been on (Brad Pitt).
We had the choice of taking lessons in the arena in the mornings or going out for a hack both morning and afternoon. The terrain is really lovely and gets more interesting the more you go out, taking it all in and looking a little closer each time.

The landscape was phenomenal, most of the riding was slow which was understandable considering the terrain and duration in the saddle. My horse was 18 years old but he had no problems and more than capable of the journey. I never felt pressured to make him go faster than he wanted to by the group which was my only worry. There were some good canters and for me it was perfect. A couple of horses developed girth sores so were treated/rested the next day, my only comment is they may want to invest in some better protectors/girth covers if possible. Otherwise my only regret was not going for the full trek... I worried I would not be fit enough for the 8 days but it's amazing what you get used to! Was not ready to leave by the end. Helene and Almaz were amazing as our guides and could not have felt more looked after.

[In The Saddle comment: Our partners in Kyrgyzstan are working hard to reduce any issues of girth sores. New girths are being purchased for next year in an extra effort to minimise the problem.]

A wide range of horses was available (47) and thought went into the choice of our equine partners. The staff asked for our opinion and feedback after each ride and when we had formed a preference they endeavoured to accommodate us, although they also considered the workload of the horses. Many of the horses were rescued and yet were fit, healthy, safe and forward. The rides were varied in terms of terrain - helped by the Azores seeming to be about 12 countries in one. There were amazing views and interesting geological features - including the 'mouth of hell' and the rim of a caldera of an extinct volcano.

Lovely horses, I rode 7 different horses in the week, (which is what you get when you say on day 2 "surprise me") all different and fun, equally if you wanted to stay with the same horse you could. Riding through absolutely stunning scenery up and down through the valley, I loved meandering around with the occasional canter but if you want long flat out gallops, this is not for you especially in the July heat, but if you enjoy spending time on a lovely horse in beautiful scenery riding at appropriate pace for heat, it's perfect.
We took opportunity to have western lessons and I can definitely recommend them as well.

The horses were happy and well looked after, we were well matched and tried a few different horses before we found the ones we really clicked with. Lots of long fast canters on willing horses, the riding was fast but safe and they accommodated all levels of riders really well. My partner who has only been riding for 9 months absolutely loved it and now has the riding bug ?

Riding was great. We decided to switch horses after a few days and guides were very flexible. The horses are the most reliable horses I've ever ridden, fast gallops, long canters and super easy to control. Overall, very well behaved and the different way of riding (standing up in trot and canter) is easy to get used to.

The horses were a joy and very forward going though a couple of people did have problems with horses spooking. It took a little while to get the feel of these speedy little horses but once I got used to it it was lovely. Our guides Pitek and Pipee were lovely and very helpful, both speaking excellent English.

I felt that the rides could have been longer, 4-5 hours left a lot of down time in the day and in such an isolated place there was not a lot else to occupy us.

The tack was generally not in good condition and there didn't seem to be sufficient knowledge of fitting it correctly. eg saddles often placed too far back or forward, cavasson nosebands buckled up too low down and with the buckle fastening outside the bit (thus potentially interfering with the action).

Some of the horses had been borrowed and their bridles were a bit rough and ready with rope reins and headpieces which I worried could cut into their necks. My horses bit was low in his mouth and I tried to adjust it as much as I could. The bit did rub his mouth. I pointed this out to the guide who changed the bridle. Tack did seem to be used somewhat interchangeably on the borrowed horses.

Unfortunately my horse got injured after the second day of riding, so I had to change horses. I liked
the new horse as well though.
Even though it is mostly walking it is still challenging and fun. You get to see great nature.
It did absolutely meet the expectations.

Castellare di Tonda - Italy

Heart of Tuscany

5 star rating   15 July 2017

I hardly ride these days after a fair bit of experience until about 10 years ago, so wanted a place where the riding was a slow/moderate pace and relaxed, in an interesting landscape. I picked Castellare di Tonda because it was Western style, in Tuscany, and the reviews so far were consistently good. The good points are mostly covered in the other reviews; the landscape was absolutely stunning, the horses all tried hard and were all responsive, the introductory lesson was really useful, and I enjoyed the walking/trotting and canters where possible. Some of the horses are on the mature side, but they are fit, in good condition and definitely enjoy the rides out. I did 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the evening, and while it was hot, we rode in wonderfully cool woods and the shade of the trees was very welcome at each time of day. I also did a reining lesson on Wednesday which was fascinating - Franco was very patient (of course the horse was great but it was like a first lesson in Chinese for me) and I got a real sense of achievement at the end by getting the horse to "flow" in a spin by (finally) getting the aids right and suddenly the horse and I were speaking the same language. Basically most things in the western style are opposite to english style - eg, drop the reins and keep your foot in the stirrup on dismounting - so the differences were quite hard to remember sometimes when you just revert to what you "know" or started out with. The horses are all very responsive to voice aids so that was also really interesting and fun to use. I wanted to ride several different horses and they were all lovely (Boy the Criollo was my favourite if I had to pick one I think!) I was super-lucky that week to be riding with only one other person in the morning, and on my own with Marco or Jess and once with Kirstin in the afternoons, who were all excellent so it was also fun to chat with them and learn more about western technique etc. All together a wonderful week for me as it was a good pace, responsive horses, lovely guides and absolutely stunning riding. AND the pool was fab and the food was incredible!! The staff at the accommodation were lovely to me and Franco even came up at breakfast on my last day to say goodbye which was so nice. All highly recommended if you're after this sort of riding and location.
