Veláni Country Hotel - Crete

Sun and Riding

5 star rating   30 October 2019

The terrain was harder than I expected but the horses were obviously used to it.

Ideally it would have been nice to ride at the beach. (Claire from In The Saddle comments the hotel is too far from the sea to offer beach rides on the centre based option but on the Lassithi trek there is the opportunity to swim with your horse at the beach but it is too stony for riding on)

I had been quite anxious before arriving at Los Alamos as I haven’t a great deal of trekking experience. I needn’t have worried. Rachel, who owns these wonderful Spanish horses, is a very experienced judge of the right matches between horse & rider which means that everyone gets to ride the horse most suited to them. The countryside is beautiful & the beach riding very enjoyable. The most magical ride was riding through the woods in the dark & emerging on to the beach at sunrise. The light was amazing.
The guides were fantastic, very careful but without any fussing. Plenty of fast paces to suit everyone but also allowing us time to wander quietly through the woods to soak up their silence. It also taught me a lot about trusting your horse to do the best thing as they know the terrain so well. It was a marvellous experience all round & greatly exceeded my expectations.

Desert Cavalcade

4 star rating   27 October 2019

The pace was quite slow and the terrain quite good. The riding was generally a hand-walking warmup, then a quick gallop after mounting up, 2 hours of walking, then a quick gallop before hand-walking to the lunch spot. The same pattern for the afternoon. The horses were fantastic with great movement and comfortable tack, very responsive and safe.

Willing, manageable horses, well suited. My horse became lame on day 4 and was replaced for the following days. A demanding guide, yet good humoured. A very willing support driver/cook.

Well paced, fun, fast riding through varied scenery- Sam was an excellent ride leader and we had great back up, especially from Silviou who always had everything ready to take care of both horses and riders at the end of the day.
I was very happy with both my horses.

The dressage instruction was excellent. I was very tired at the end of the lesson! The trail rides were all similar, however. So while it was a pleasant ride, there wasn't much new to see each time we went out.

Riding was excellent, my horse was forward and lively, and very friendly. I like that the route was flexible and our guide Dallas could choose the path depending on the weather conditions and the wishes of the group.

Tuli Safari - Botswana

Tuli Safari

5 star rating   20 October 2019

The riding on the Tuli trail far exceeded my expectations! Right from the moment we set off from the stables we started to encounter some of the many game the reserve is homed to. The guides had no issues stopping whenever we asked to so we could snap pictures (although only when safe to do so!). Over the week we had so many sightings, not just on horseback but in the jeep to, including; leopards, lions and a mother with younger cheetah cubs enjoying their freshly caught lunch.
Each ride had a varied pace to it, and for much of the week we stuck to a slower pace to accommodate a less confident rider who joined our ride as part of the "African explorer", but after they left the guides were happy for us to kick it up a few gears and also allowed us to jump some of the fallen trees.
All the horses were cared for impeccably and the grooms were happy for you to assist them, when appropriate, at the end of the rides. They always had fresh water and full haynets provided for them at all times of the day

Fantastic adventure through varied landscapes with exciting game sightings. The pace was varied with some long slow canters in denser vegetation and faster paces on open ground with jumping for those who wanted. We were lucky to have a great guide, David, who went to great lengths to ensure the varying needs of the group were met and all were happy. Game sightings exceeded expectations, lion, leopard, elephant, hyena, all seen from horseback and cantering amongst the giraffe was unforgettable. David and Tsoane’s knowledge and obvious love of this environment was infectious, thank you to them!

Wild Coast - South Africa

Wild Coast Adventure Trail

4 star rating   19 October 2019

The saddles were uncomfortable, very wide and put a lot of pressure on the inner thigh. I ride every day and am riding fit, but the saddles caused a fair bit of discomfort. They were good for the horses which is paramount, but it did impact quite strongly on the riding pleasure. Claire from In The Saddle writes – the ride operator uses good quality South African trail saddles with sheepskin covers so we are very sorry to read that you were not comfortable. We do recommend that if you are in any discomfort that you raise this with the guide because sometimes buckles from the stirrup leathers or girth can be moved to relieve pressure.

Provence Trails - France

Luberon and The Camargue

5 star rating   19 October 2019

It exceeded my expectations! The group was of mixed ability, ranging from people who own their own horses and ride everyday, to less frequent riders such as myself who only ride occasionally, and despite this, everyone commented that the riding was perfect for them, which is really hard to achieve! A good mix of mostly walk, trot, and the occasional canter (galloping on the beach past the flamingos in the Camargue was the best moment of the holiday for me!) Scenery was incredible. The horses were superb and despite varying terrain you never felt worried on them at all. Getting involved with the grooming and tacking up I loved as well, but with people always on hand to help if needed. By the end of the holiday I put the bridle and saddle on for the first time by myself! I already miss my horse Carmen.

African Explorer - Botswana and South Africa

African Explorer

5 star rating   18 October 2019

The riding in SA was a mixture of walk and fast paced short canters for roughly 3 hours at a time. Terrain was almost sandy, with rocky hills - the canters were fast along tracks or weaving through bushes. Great fun.
The riding in Bots was a mixture of walking and long controlled canters, riding for approx 6 hours at a time. Terrain was dusty and rocky, with a lot of thorny bushes. Canters were either in open spaces, or through the bushes. Be prepared for long canters (they go on and on!).

The riding and experience of seeing the wild animals in the bush at close hand even surpassed our high expectations. It was fantastic. My daughters and I are all at different levels of riding but we all totally enjoyed the same rides by being on well matched horses. I liked being on a steady horse whilst one of my daughters enjoyed riding forward going horses

El Bronco - Hungary

Ranch Stay

5 star rating   18 October 2019

The staff and trainers at the ranch were really fantastic.
Both Raj & I were paired perfectly with our horses, Dorris and Pouffy, who were both exceptionally well trained and impeccably behaved.
Raj had had western lessons previously but never ridden outside an arena before and on every trail Pouffy looked after him brilliantly at walk, trot and canter. He was forward going and responsive whilst being utterly safe for an inexperienced rider, Raj's enjoyment went from strength to strength as did his confidence and ability.
Dorris was exactly what I had hoped for and more, calm and dependable whilst being responsive and capable, having felt very nervous about riding again, she looked after me completely and helped me find my feet back in the saddle after a 4 year gap since suffering an injury following an accident.
We were impressed by all the horses we saw, they are clearly cared for to a very high standard, well trained and their individual characters and strengths perfectly understood by those responsible for allocating them to the riders.

Los Alamos - Spain

Villa Based Ride

5 star rating   13 October 2019

The high points of my week at Los Alamos were the gallops along the beach, but I have many other wonderful memories as well. I rode Camboria all week and was completely in love with her from the first day. The guides took good care of us and the horses were all very well cared for.

On the less than perfect side, the biting insects were definitely a problem and the extremely dry trails meant that lots of dust was kicked up when we did anything faster than walking.
