Namibia - Namib Desert

Namib Desert

Received on 28 July 2016

Posted by: Bulldog who has been on 5 In The Saddle rides. "Across the Namib" The riding was by far the most challenging of the 5 similar trips I have completed, mainly because the canters were long, sometimes 2 or 3 miles which I am not used to. Usually I ride only 90 minutes a week but I am happy to say that even at the age of 64 I was able to complete this challenging ride. The support from the guide and other members of the safari company was a significant factor in my enjoying the trip. I would say however, that it really was a challenge physically for me but that I am delighted at having achieved a 215 mile ride across the vast desert and I get huge satisfaction from that. My only tip is to try it at age 24 not 64 but I am proof that one does not have to be a great rider or hugely experienced in order to complete the trip safely. The camping, without tents, was another bonus as one fell to sleep watching the stars in the black sky. There were also uninvited visitors to the camp at times, the zebras seemed curious about us and walked between our camp beds. In fact we saw a lot of wild game, zebras, oryx and springbok, even in the most arid parts of the desert. The meals cooked on a camp fire by our chef were so sophisticated that I nicknamed him Mr Magic as he truly did seem to conjure up dishes out of nothing. An unforgettable experience in the vast empty desert, so different from our overcrowded lives in Europe. But I can not thank the Namibia horse safari company enough for their encouragement and organisation which helped see me through this great challenge. It has been said that the only true failure is the failure to try. My hope is that others will give it a go as I did. You never know what you can achieve until you try. Although at times I felt weary I will never regret taking on this challenge. (ITS NOTE: Well done on completing this ride - a great achievement!)

Montana - Rocking Z Ranch

Ranch Stay

Received on 28 July 2016

Posted by: Footloose who has been on 9 In The Saddle rides. "A great experience" The horses initially allocated were not suitable - Ruth's dished and was not a smooth ride whereas Ruth, with her disability need a horse with smooth paces, Elizabeth's was fine. Mine was a youngster and became very upset with the slow pace towards the end of the ride. I was at the back and Elizabeth and Ruth's horses were very slow so that I had to keep checking the horse. If I had been on a faster ride he would have been fine! The next day Ruth & myselfwe were given different horses and they were ideal. I did enjoy the holiday, the above are only minor points as you do need feedback. All the family and their 'interns' were very friendly and we all had a good time with extra activities like given instruction in pistol shooting, lassoing and Pirelli. The other guests went on a day ride with a picnic lunch with the destination being a local saloon over the mountains . We were taken by car to meet them there in the late afternoon and met the 'locals' at the bar. We had a real taste of the Rocky Mountains!!! The other guests did go out very, very early on two days to join in on a neighbouring ranch, rounding up cattle to bring them down from the mountains to lower pasture. We did go to a rodeo which was an extra. They took us for a carriage ride drawn by a pair of Belgian heavy horses one evening. They had their own 'saloon' at the ranch where we could sit after dinner and relax with a drink and have a game of pool.
