Argentina - Polo

Argentina is famous all over the world for its polo ponies and polo players. The game is played all over the country from the smart polo estancias with their immaculate polo fields to the villages of the Sierras Chicas.

Fun, fast and exciting, polo is a competitive team sport that combines good horsemanship with team tactics and ball skills. Often too expensive or inaccessible to try at home, the different options at Los Potreros allow you to try this fabulous game in a truly unique environment. Argentina has the best polo players in the world and so what better place to start? If you have never tried it, we should warn you that polo is highly addictive!

Informal polo with tuition is normally available once a week at Los Potreros (weather permitting) at no extra charge. All guests are invited to participate provided they are aged 12 and over. There is usually the opportunity to ‘Stick and Ball’ with the gauchos and to play informal chukkas.

Polo Taster Sessions This package is for guests on an Estancia Stay. It consists of 3 consecutive half days on the polo ground, where guests are introduced to the basics of the game – the basic shots and rules and of course the play. Offered as an addition to a stay at the estancia, this is an ideal way to gain an introduction to the sport without committing to a full Polo Holiday. Polo Taster Sessions cost USD 150 (payable locally) for 3 half day polo sessions including tuition. This option is suitable for all levels of rider and is aimed at those without much prior polo experience.

Learn to Play Polo Weeks aimed at the beginner, novice or occasional player who wishes to learn how to play, brush up their skills or just have some fun in an informal and friendly environment. Half-day polo sessions are combined with stunning trail rides out into the estancia on fabulous horses. There are usually three or four dates scheduled, normally during March and November. However it is normally possible with sufficient numbers to arrange a Learn to Play Polo Week at most times of the year. These weeks are best suited to intermediate to advanced riders. Tuition will be from an experienced polo player on the staff at the estancia.

Polo Holidays designed for those guests wishing to focus entirely on improving their game, with sessions on the polo ground both morning and afternoon, consisting of ‘stick and ball’ and practice chukkas each day. Personalised and quality coaching will be provided by an Argentine polo professional. This option is aimed at the beginner through to the more experienced player. However, guests will get the most out of the Polo Holiday if they have had some previous polo experience and are riding fit. For this ride you should be at least an intermediate rider, comfortable and confident at all paces, with a secure seat.

Some fantastic options to try, take up or improve your skills in this addictive sport.

My top tip:

If you are new to polo you may find your right arm and wrist (polo is always played right handed) get very tired so try doing some strengthening exercies before your holiday.
