One of life's great experiences; tölting on Icelandic horses across frozen lakes in the depths of winter.
Riding in the snow is exhilarating both on forest tracks and on ice but this holiday is as much about trying other winter outdoor activities as well as riding. It is also an opportunity to learn about the Sami culture including ice fishing and reindeer herding. Sami guides, who are at home in this extreme environment, will take you on an exciting adventure.
The Icelandic horse is the perfect mount for exploring in the snow. Despite their small size they are hardy and have great stamina. If you have not ridden Icelandics before, this trip is a great introduction to the breed.
You are likely to see reindeer and moose on the rides and hopefully the northern lights. When not flying around the country on sleds or snow mobiles, there is the wonderful peace and calm of being in the wilderness covered in a blanket of snow.
The pace is not fast and is dictated by the terrain but there are opportunities to tölt. The Icelandic horses are small, up to 13.2hh but are strong and fun to ride. There is a rider weight limit of 90kgs.
The guides' knowledge of the region and weather allows them
to adapt their routes depending on local conditions. The following is an
illustration of the likely itinerary but local conditions may dictate
that the order of the itinerary needs to be changed, always with your
best interests in mind.
Day One
You will be met on arrival at Kiruna
airport and transferred to the farm at Puoltsa. After an introductory
ride (if time) before dinner.
Day Two
After a lesson in how to drive a snowmobile you travel
by snowmobile into the mountains and try your hand at ice fishing on a
small lake. In the evening you ride out into the forest in search of
reindeer and moose and then later enjoy dinner around the fire in a
goahti (Sami hut), where the guide will talk to you about Sami culture.
Day Three
Today you have an introduction to the traditional mode
of transport in the area, reindeer sledging. In the afternoon transfer
to the Ice Hotel for one night.
Day Four
When you get back from the Ice Hotel you will ride out
into the forest and in the afternoon a riding lesson will introduce you
to the special gaits of the Icelandic horse.
Day Five
Today you ride deep into the forest, and perhaps over
the frozen ice. In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to visit
Kiruna.
Day Six
This morning you will ride out into the forest in search
of moose and reindeer, and later in the afternoon a riding lesson on
the oval tolting track.
Day Seven
After breakfast you will be transferred to Kiruna airport for your flight home.
Accommodation on this ride is usually shared and may be mixed sex. Five nights are spent in simple and warm accommodation at the horse farm, located next to the river Kalix. There are three bedrooms and a shared bathroom and communal area. One night is spent at the Ice Hotel in the village of Jukkasjärvi.
It is possible to pay a supplement for a single room at the farm and the Ice Hotel (subject to availability).
