The vast area of Damaraland has a varied terrain of mountains, rivers and open grassy plains. It is world famous for the desert elephant which roam freely here. Other game to be found include black rhino, some plains game and occasionally lions.

Perched on the rim of the Etendeka Plateau, Grootberg lodge stands over the stunning Klip River Valley. Using the lodge as your base ride through this fantastic region. There is no set itinerary and each day is flexible for you to ride out and explore a different area.

On the plateau near the lodge the terrain is rocky offering scenic walking rides with stunning views. Full day rides take you down off the plateau into the plains which are open and sandy. These offer faster riding with lovely canters and the chance to explore looking for some of the desert adapted wildlife that exists in this remote area. We suggest that during your stay you have two or more nights camping out on the plains as this gives you the opportunity to explore further and track the elephant trails, hopefully with the chance to see these majestic animals.

The horses are a mixture of breeds including Warmblood and Boerperd crosses plus farm bred horses. All are well schooled with good paces.

Stay at Grootberg Lodge in one of twelve rock and thatch chalets. Perched on the edge of the plateau the chalets offer spectacular views from their private decks, often with the sight of black eagles hunting over the slopes below.

Activities available for accompanying non riders include scenic drives and guided walks, plus elephant and black rhino tracking from vehicle. Or just spend time soaking up the African sun by the pool and enjoying the peace and tranquility of the desert.
