Your guide Ingeborg is an advanced level endurance rider and regularly competes on her Okapuka Arabians at endurance races throughout Namibia. One of her horses won the prestigious 'Endurance Horse of the Year' award in 2007.

You too can participate in a competitive endurance ride on one of the Okapuka horses. You will be accompanied throughout the ride by either Ingeborg herself or one of her staff who will set the riding pace to help guide you. The race distance you enter will be at Ingeborg's discretion depending on whether you have competed at endurance before, your fitness level and the local conditions. It could range from 30kms up to 75kms.

In order to prepare for the endurance ride you should arrive at Okapuka several days in advance. In the days running up to the event two horses are allocated to you and each day you have a safari ride in the wildlife reserve as well as a training ride on your endurance horse. You also spend time practicing your trot-up and the vetting process. Even if you have never competed before, Ingeborg will show you what is required so that you know what to expect on the day. If you are already competing in the UK you are sure to find it fascinating to see how endurance is run in another country.

You travel to the event on Friday and have plenty of time to check out the venue, ride your horse and prepare for the pre-ride vetting. Saturday is an early start and depending on the expected weather the ride will start around 6am. With a usual average speed of 16 - 18 kph the rides are finished by early afternoon and later there is a prize giving and dinner. On Sunday you pack up and make the journey back to Okapuka. You will have a groom to assist you at the event but will be expected to actively take care of your horse.
