This is a popular trail through the beautiful Magdalen Valley. You ride through many large sheep stations that have barely changed over the years.
Life in this part of New Zealand goes at a leisurely pace and is ruled by the seasons and the weather. The scenery is quite dramatic and you wonder how the farmers have survived over the years on this rugged landscape.
Your guides know the area well and have mustered sheep on many of the farms you ride over. They know how to cope with the ever changing weather conditions. Their horses are a sure footed hardy herd of Thoroughbred Clydesdale crosses, most of which were bred on their own farm.
Pack horses are used for carrying your luggage and supplies, although the support vehicle will meet you every few days with fresh supplies. There is, however, limited space for luggage and the luggage limit is 12kms which must be packed and rolled into your swag (provided).
You stay in basic shearers huts or tents and really get an understanding of how life works on high county sheep stations.
We will always book you into the horse base at Waitohi Downs for the night before the ride and the night you get back. This allows for flexability if weather conditons hamper the ride.
