Spend eight nights exploring the ranches of the Laikipa region north of Nairobi. Laikipia is a unique wildlife area and contains an enormous diversity of wildlife from the Big Five downward. It is famous as the last reserve of the Jacksons Hartebeest and is home of several rare species such as the Reticulated Giraffe, Beisa Oryx, Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk and Somali Ostrich amongst others. In recent years the various landowners have tended away from exclusive cattle ranching to embrace more tolerance of game and even large predators such as lion and hyaena are more abundant now than they would have been 25 years ago.
You camp far off the beaten track, supported by a lorry and four-wheel drive vehicles. The campsites are remote and secluded and you leave the area as you find it. The spacious tents are all furnished with large beds, 24hour solar lighting and the finest linen. Towels, soap and torches are provided. Hot bucket showers wash away the dust of the day and long drop loos are provided.
Informal dining is hosted in the mess tent or around the campfire. Delicious English breakfasts, light lunches and four course dinners are served each evening. Guests can relax in the bar and 'mess' tent, furnished with comfortable sofas, a writing desk and library with wildlife guide books.
Your safari ends with two nights at Sosian ranch, located on the vast Laikipia plateau. There are over 24,000 acres of wild bush to explore which supports a wide diversity of wildlife and birds and is home to four of the ‘Big Five’ as well as a host of other large mammals, including cheetah and the rare wild dog. Sosian is the Samburu word for the wild date palm.
Sosian was originally built in the 1940s by Italian artisans and the newly renovated ranch house sits at the heart of the ranch. Fourteen people can be accommodated in seven double, ensuite cottages. A comfortable sitting and dining area overlooks the garden with views of the wide Ewaso Narok River basin. There is a billiard room, tennis court and swimming pool.
