Our rides take place high in the heart of the Andes, in magnificent wild open country beneath the stunning snow-capped Andean peaks. You gain a real insight into local life as you ride between tiny patchwork fields in lush green valleys then ascend towards the snow-capped Cotopaxi. Your guide Sally has been leading tours in Ecuador since 1996 when she moved from England having been completely taken aback by the sheer wildness and beauty of the Andean landscape.
The horses used on the rides are Criollo cross. Descended from the Spanish Conquistadors' stock, the Criollo are fit and sure footed, ideal for the terrain of the high Andes. They are specially selected, well trained and good natured.
The pace is very varied due to the great variety of landscapes. Usually there are lots of trots and canters and sometimes faster. Please note though that the rides in Ecuador, due to the altitude, are not suitable for those who want to 'gallop flat out' all day. Instead there will be long and flowing canters. The horses settle into a wonderful rhythm and you are asked never to push the horses; if they want to slow down then this is fine.
Ride along ancient Inca highways and Spanish colonial routes between the haciendas in two stunningly beautiful, yet very distinct areas of the Ecuadorian highlands. Begin the week riding on the grassy tracks between the patchwork fields of the green valleys of the northern highlands; then on the fifth day you make the short journey by vehicle through the stunning scenery of the 'Avenue of Volcanoes'. Meet fresh horses and ride south into very different scenery. Continue towards the perfect conical shape of the Cotopaxi Volcano and ride up into the gently undulating grasslands, across the Cotopaxi foothills and into the pine and eucalyptus forests before ending the ride galloping across the arid plains below the snow-capped Cotopaxi peak.
Throughout the ride you pass through villages which are home to very friendly Ecuadorians in their vibrant traditional dress going about their daily tasks; the children shepherding the unruly pigs and sheep and the farmers working the land in much the same way as their forefathers did. This is a fascinating insight into Andean country life. You also visit the famous Otavalo market and the fascinating local market at Saquisili which have changed very little over the centuries. Marvel at the array of exotic Andean fruits.
Nights are spent in haciendas - historic country houses, most dating back to the 17th and 18th century. Warmly greeted by the owners, you can relax in front of open fireplaces and enjoy the fine period detail, atmospheric courtyards and flowering gardens. The haciendas are quite unique and hold an important place in the history of Ecuador. Most are still the homes of the noblest of Ecuadorian families including past presidents and one is the most important Inca site in northern Ecuador.
