This has to be the most spectacular beach ride in the world. Ride along mile after mile of deserted sandy beaches along the crashing surf of the Wild Coast.
The Wild Coast is well off the regular tourist routes, but the lack of regular visitors makes it even more attractive as a riding destination. The coastline is spectacularly beautiful and you also ride through rolling green hills where rural African village life goes on much as it has done for centuries.
You stay in simple beach hotels and although the accommodation isn’t fancy you are welcomed as old friends.
Day 1: Met on arrival at East London and transferred by road to the horse base at Kei Mouth or their home - Sunray Farm. Time permitting, have an introductory ride and your first view of this stunning coastline.
Day 2: Set off on the trail. Cross the Kei River on a pontoon with your horse and continue around the coastline from sandy cove to sandy cove to arrive at the historic Trennery’s Hotel for lunch. Have a couple of hours to laze around the swimming pool or explore the beach. In the late afternoon ride across countryside and finish with a sunset canter down the beach. Overnight at Trennery’s for two nights.
Day 3: Visit a local community project and learn about Xhosa traditions and customs. Meander on horseback through the tribal villages marvelling at the brightly coloured homes. After lunch enjoy more glorious beach riding to visit the shipwreck of the Jacaranda and, depending on the tides, some long canters on the hard sand.
Day 4: Continue along the coast. Sometimes along the beach, sometimes across country and through rural villages, the horses set a steady pace at trot and canter so that you arrive at Wavecrest for lunch. The horses rest this afternoon and you have the time to take a boat trip up river to explore the Mangrove swamps or just sit back and relax. Overnight at Wavecrest for two nights.
Day 5: Depending on the tide, either wade the Nxaxo River with the horses or ride around inland. This is a day for some unbelievable beach riding for up to 20km along the beach before stopping for a picnic lunch and later returning tired but happy to Wavecrest.
Day 6: Today you have to start your journey home. Ride along beaches and across the rolling hills and arrive back to the Kei Mouth and the pontoon crossing back to civilisation. Overnight at Kei Mouth, Morgan Ba or Sunray Farm.
Day 7: Transfer to the airport for your
flight home. It is also possible to extend
your holiday by staying on to visit the
nearby Inkwenkwezi Game Reserve for
a tented safari.
