The Torres del Paine National Park and surrounding area is unquestionably a superb place to ride. One of South America’s most prized National Parks this area encompasses a wild landscape of diverse and dramatic scenery.
Our riding trips take place around the edge of Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chilean Patagonia in some of the world's most spectacular scenery. Prior to its creation as a National Park, the area was part of a huge working estancia. The name 'Paine' comes from a Tehuelche Indian word meaning blue. The 'Torres' are named after the three enormous granite peaks which form the focal point of this section of the southern range of the Andes mountains.
Lying at the tip of the South American continent, Patagonia is separated from the rest of Chile by a barrier of fjords and mountains. The rugged, wild beauty of this area is so unique that much of it is protected under World Biosphere, National Park or National Reserve status. However, outside of the National Park the land is owned privately by the many estancias in the area; a number of them larger than some European countries. These estancias offer fantastic open pampas for some thrilling riding.
This ride starts in the historic town of Punta Arenas and journeys north across working estancias towards the glorious Torres del Paine National Park. The accommodation on the estancias is typical of the region showing how life was for the first settlers in the area over a hundred years ago. At most estancias you have the opportunity to meet the owners and talk to them about the area and their family history.
This ride is organised and guided by Gustavo (from Chile) and his English wife Heidi and you ride their well-loved and beautifully schooled horses for the duration of the trip, exploring open pampa, woodlands and lagoons. The snow-capped mountains are forever on the horizon and you have tempting glimpses of the National Park as you ride ever closer. Whether skirting strikingly blue lakes, climbing narrow mountain paths or cantering fast across the pampas, the skyline is dominated by the majestic Paine Massif.
On the penultimate day you have the opportunity to hike to the base of the Towers themselves - a rewarding challenge, or you can choose to just relax at the spa at Estancia Las Torres. Return to Puerto Natales in the most exciting way possible - by boat down the Ultima Esperanza fjord, stopping off for a short walk to the Serrano glacier.
