This wonderful ride is in the north-east of India, in the main tea-growing centre of Assam, on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra river.
The state of Assam is dominated by the Brahmaputra, one of the great rivers of the world. The broad river valley is sandwiched between the Himalayan foothills to the north and the plateau of Meghalaya to the south.
Your base for the holiday is a beautifully renovated former tea manager’s bungalow set in the midst of the tea gardens. From your veranda and over morning tea, you will hear the jingle of bicycle bells and the chatter of the tea workers as they walk or cycle to work. There are two bungalows, one with four en suite bedrooms and the other with two. Each has a lovely sitting room and veranda. Meals are a real treat and you will enjoy some very tasty Indian and Asian cuisine.
The horses are beautifully turned out thoroughbreds and you ride in several quite
different areas. On some days you ride through the tea gardens where there is the opportunity to learn about the history and production of tea. Other rides head out through the farms and villages that spread out from the banks of the river. It is also possible to ride out to islands which appear in the dry season. These are sandy and provide perfect going for some faster riding. Another wonderful ride is into the rain forest, full of sights, sounds and smells so very different from home. Throughout the area you will see farmers working their fields in a way unchanged for centuries. We are supporting a small school in the forest and make a contribution in respect of each guest.
During the week you take a break from riding for two days and journey west to Kaziranga National Park. The park is world famous for its population of one-horned rhinoceros. Sightings are relatively common and you should be able to see these amazing animals from vehicle and also from the back of an elephant.
This is more than just a riding holiday, it is
a chance to get to know the warm, friendly people of a beautiful part of the world.
