Join a safari into the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. This World Heritage Site covers an area of over 600,000 acres with over 100 miles of magnificent sandy beaches.
The spectacular diversity of the iSimangaliso (previously known as The Greater St Lucia) Wetland Park includes open seas, reefs, pristine beaches, forests, savannahs, lakes, rivers, dunes and mountains and supports a wide range of flora and fauna. The coastal dunes are among the tallest forested dunes in the world. iSimangaliso's uniqueness lies in its remarkable variety, particularly its combination of a subtropical coastline and a classic African game park.
Game viewing is good all year round and on safari you can expect to see great sightings of hippo, crocodile, waterbuck, kudu, zebra, impala, reedbuck, buffalo and white rhino and perhaps a glimpse of the rare oribi.
The coastline is the southern most breeding point for the huge Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles. Between November and February it is possible to take a guided drive in the evening (at extra cost) to see the females laying their eggs in the sand. Humpback whales frequent the coast between June and November, often with their young. However it is the bird life for which the Park is probably most famous. There are over 500 species in the Park including pelicans, herons, terns and storks. When the lake gets very salty there can be over 50,000 flamingos.
The weather, location of game and the riding experience of the group will influence the riding pace and where you go. The horses are occasionally moved by trailer to other parts of the park.
There are also a number of other activities available in the area (at extra cost) including
a night game drive, turtle tours (November - February) and whale watching (June - November). Depending on tide and weather conditions, you may also like to take the chance to go kayaking or snorkelling.
There are two styles of safari both of which use a tented camp as a base for the safari. On the Adventure Safari you stay in basic but comfortable dome tents, with shared ablutions. Or you can join the luxurious True Safari, which offers excellent food and fine wine, spacious colonial style tents and en-suite bathroom facilities.
