The Man from Snowy River by AB “Banjo” Patterson has inspired many to come and ride in what is arguably some of Australia’s most picturesque and challenging country.
Ride though the Kosciuszko National Park for up to five days covering a distance of some 100 miles. Much of the Snowy Mountains are contained within the Kosciuszko National Park and Mt Kosciuszko (Kozzy-osko) is Australia’s highest mainland peak at 2,228m.
The outfitter with whom you will be riding pioneered riding trips in the National Park over thirty years ago and has a deep knowledge and understanding of the park. This alpine wilderness has a history rich in legends of mountain horsemen. Riding through this country will take you around mountain lakes, along crystal clear streams and up to peaks with stunning views. The area is home to emus, kangaroos and wombats as well as herds of brumbies (Australian wild horses).
Day 1: Afternoon transfer from Cooma to
the homestead. Accommodation is in shared rooms but with a few doubles available.
Days 2 - 5: After breakfast you will be taken to the horses and the start of the ride. Set off to explore Kosciuszko National Park. Rides through the northern part of the Park take you to places such as Cave Creek, Currango Plain, Tantangara Creek, Mount Tantangara (well known for the wild brumbies that frequent the area) and Mount Morgan.
You will be taken to streams where trout fishing is at its best - or possibly visit a gold mine where fortunes have been won and lost.
For the next four nights you camp in roomy tents with comfy mattresses. Welcome lunches appear from packhorses and evenings are spent around the campfire. A hearty three course meal is cooked for you, accompanied by freshly-made damper, washed down with mugs of piping hot billy tea. All rides are supported by four wheel drive vehicles which carry your bags.
Your evening tasks are to sit back, do nothing but enjoy the relaxation and sense of physical well-being from a great day’s ride.
Day 6: Last day of riding and arrive back at the homestead for a welcome shower.
Day 7: After breakfast transfer back
to Cooma.
