South Kaipara Head is one of the most beautiful areas of New Zealand and this riding holiday will give you the opportunity to explore in depth the uninhabited beaches, green fields, cool forest and picturesque lakes.
Much of the riding here is on the Muriwai Beach, known locally as the 30 mile beach, along which the horses just love to gallop. Venturing inland you ride over some dramatic sand dunes and through a patchwork of farmland, forests and lakes.
Your host and guide Rod is a descendant
of the first European settlers in the area. He is a farmer by profession and first started riding on the family horse to school. Rod has extensive knowledge of local history, fauna and flora. Meals are prepared by his wife Bev, who takes great care to provide you with delicious dinners. The menu is forever changing as Bev loves to be innovative and keep up to date with her recipes - so you are definitely in for a treat! Local produce is used wherever possible.
Nights are spent at Rod and Bev’s beautiful home which can sleep up to six guests. Depending on the length of your stay, you may also spend one or two nights in former shearers’ quarters on the other side of
the peninsula.
Rod and Bev’s house, which has been in the family for three generations, has wonderful views out over Kaipara Harbour. You are welcome to make use of the swimming pool, relax on the decks and enjoy this very
tranquil environment.
Non-riders are also more than welcome. If you have your own car then the surrounding area has much of interest including a variety of farming from kiwi fruit orchards to macadamia nuts, as well as sheep, cattle, dairy and deer farming.
