Situated south from Granada, the Sierra Nevada is the highest mountain range
in Spain. Explore this region of stunning natural beauty, riding through an ever changing landscape, no two valleys, ravines or summits alike.
Ride through one of the most beautiful regions of Spain. Little has changed here over the centuries, the mule and ox still pull the plough in the tiny terraced fields, the horse and mule still provide transport and the shepherd still tends his flock of sheep on
the mountainside.
Starting from Bubion, the riding trails follow ancient Moorish drovers’ paths through steep valleys filled with Mediterranean almond and walnut groves up to high summer pastures irrigated by the snow melt. You pass through pretty white villages with narrow winding streets and ancient Moorish architecture. On some of the very steep descents it is necessary to lead the horses and these rides are not for those who suffer from vertigo.
The horses are Andalucian and Andalucian crosses and have all been expertly schooled by their owner and your guide Dallas Love. They are fit, surefooted and responsive with the classic good nature of the breed, enjoying their work and a real pleasure to ride.
You are expected to tack up and groom your horse, although assistance is available if you need help.
You stay in small comfortable village inns and each day your luggage is taken ahead for you. During the day there will be several rest stops and a leisurely picnic lunch of locally cured hams and cheeses accompanied by freshly baked bread and salads. Evening meals give you the opportunity to sample the unique local cuisine and Spanish wines.
THE CONTRAVIESA RIDE
This runs in Spring and Autumn and takes you through the lower Contraviesa mountain range which lies between the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean. Due to the proximity of the coast the climate is warmer and more arid than higher up in the Sierra Nevada. On this trail you ride through the mountains to a new village each day, including spending a night in Trevelez, the highest village in Spain.
THE ALPUJARRA RIDE
This runs in summer months and takes you higher into the mountains avoiding the heat of the valleys. You stay at three different locations, returning to Bubion on the penultimate evening for a final ride into
the mountains.
