Lying a few miles off the coast of Mozambique, the Bazaruto Archipelago is famous for its white pristine beaches, warm clear waters, game fishing and water sports.
There are regular flights between Johannesburg and Vilanculos and then easy transfers to the luxury lodges dotted around the islands that make up the Archipelago. These make an ideal addon to a southern Africa riding safari. The warm tropical waters surrounding the islands support a huge variety of fish, coral, marine mammals and plants.
DIVING
There are a number of reefs suitable for novice to advanced divers and most of the lodges have dedicated dive centres. Hard and soft corals are in abundance. A huge variety of reef fish, whale sharks and manta rays, schools of pelagic kingfish and barracuda may be seen as well as stingray, sharks, potato bass, moray eel and turtles.
GAME FISHING
The Bazaruto Archipelago has been considered one of East Africa's premier fishing destinations since the late 50's.There is a great variety of offshore species including sailfish, wahoo, dorado, king mackerel, tuna and the mighty Black Marlin. A tag and release system is operated on all game fish.
SEA SAFARIS
Whales, dolphins, sharks and dugongs are all prevalent in the waters at various times of the year. Humpback whales migrate though the islands between June and November. Sightings of whale sharks are common from April to July. There are four different species of dolphins that can be seen year round.
MARLIN LODGE
Built on elevated wooden stilts, Marlin Lodge overlooks the tranquil Flamingo Bay. The wood, reed and thatch chalets are a blend of elegance and African island beauty. INDIGO BAY RESORT
Indigo Bay is on Bazaruto, the largest island in the archipelago. The resort comprises 29 chalets and 12 suites, all are thatched and blend in with the natural surroundings.
